Smoke on advancing destroyers...

Probably long discussed already either here or in the ST forums...

Anyhow, why does an advancing (from the player's POV) destroyer go invisible when it pops smoke? The smoke exits the funnel, does it not? The funnel is aft of the bow and bridge, is it not? Why does all of that disappear when the DD pulls his plug?

I have no problem if they do it while retreating. But charging me, popping smoke and cloaking? Nah... cheeseball programming.

There is guide for DD to slow their speed when Smoking, as the spread speed for the smoke is slower then DD Average speed

Unlike in real life, where the smoke actually comes out from the funnel then blanket the area as it spreads, in game smoke when applied, pops a cloud at the center of the ship and thus concealing the ship for a split second then it emerge from the cloud gets spotted as it applies another cloud of smoke, and so on.

That's why you get blinking destroyers in game when they pop smoke.

This is game design thing, to simplify smoke production process. The game generates a puff of smoke every couple of seconds, the puff has 450m radius centered on the DD.

If we were to make smoke generation realistic, the game has to generate smaller puffs of smoke but at much higher frequency, and that costs more server resources to do. Not sure how much, but consider how it's the way things go since beginning of CBT (or even earlier than that), it's fairly safe to say WG is satisfied with the way it is right now.

This kind of smoke mechanics does have gameplay advantages though, as it actually allow DD to conceal themselves during an attack. I know this is silly, but making smoke generation realistic would render smoke into a complete defensive weapon.

Heh, USN DD (Had to) do this all the time unless you want to be a exclusive Gun Boat that do Painfully low Damage.

And extremely annoying and hard to be taken out at range.

Half of USN DD gun damage against non-DD ships should come from fire, especially on BB and CV as they are big and burn pretty nicely.

Only thing I hate about smoke after the patch is DDs popping it and then shooting non stop from within while staying invisible and its impossible to fire back.
