What if rather than trying to balance every battle the same way, MM threw you into several different game modes depending on your ship class randomly. For example:

>Java Sea

Heavy cruiser and destroyers only 

>Jutland

Majority BB's with a 4~5 or three CAs/DDs as scouts

>Kill the BB

BB+ escorts VS. a larger number of DDs

>Kill the CV

Carrier + escorts VS. a larger number of surface ships 

>Ten-Go

1 BB vs 10 Carriers

 

We'd get a lot more game play variety and ships that don't do well in one mode might shine in another.

(OK, so Ten-Go mode might not be so fun...)

天号作戦 (Tengou Sakusen - Operation Ten-Go) and the Battles of Java Sea and Jutland will probably appear in a historical battle format when they do get released. This would be an idea of how HBs should be implemented.

 

"Kill the BB" and "Kill the CV" modes would probably appear in a night battle format just because it's fun when you can't see torpedoes coming. :P

Objectives like those would be interesting, Ten-Go sounds brutal (Yamato and escort vs CVs)

Like historic battles but without the nationality limitation or choice of format.

Historic/national battles in WOT failed because everyone just drove the same tank & everyone wanted to play the biggest baddest thing availible.  I think it would work better just like random battles > Nationalities mixed (no21 knot 16km range US battleship group vs JP 30knot, 20km range battle group ), and you have no idea which battle you format you get thrown into.

I can imagine Ten-Go being something similar to the White Tiger format they had years ago, where one (white, and super-buffed) Tiger was matched against 15 T-34s who had to take her down.

 

I'm guessing that it will be a survival scenario for that; the Yamato player must survive for X minutes to win for a fixed amount of XP, with an optional requirement to shoot down as many CVs as possible for more XP.
