Suggested new points earner - defended carrier

I'm sure this has been raised before, but in case it hasn't, here goes:

Carriers are unique in that they have very little actual shipboard defence, and it makes sense in a game for one or two cruisers or the like to stick by them and defend them. There is, however, little percentage for the individual player in doing this. At the moment there are points for helping to defend the base, or capture the enemy base (often this just involves steaming into the right place and scoring a hit on an enemy vessel), but there is no acknowledgement or reward for hanging around the most vulnerable ships in one's fleet, helping to supplement their AA fire and trying to stop enemy ships from sinking them.

In fact, a player can be a Really Useful little engine indeed in this game and get little out of it. The big point scorers seem to be those whose shots or torpedoes are lucky enough to be the ones that finish the enemy off. The rest of the team runs around the place, whittling enemy hit points right down to nothing, looking after the carriers and generally fighting the good fight, and after surviving or not are rewarded with a few  hundred experience points.

I'm not really complaining, mind. I love the game - best stress release since whiskey was invented. And of course if the player doesn't do much, they shouldn't get much. I'm just wondering, though, if the mechanics of the game can be tweaked a bit to reward different types of contributions to the battle.

There is a reward for shooting down planes, however the amount it gives is rather unsatisfactory. It takes roughly 40 aircraft kills to receive as much reward as killing a full health ship.

As for Carrier: They have 2 choices:

- Go full bomber: It is risk-taking move, he needs support to survive, but it pays off. This is IJN CV style.

- Go Hybrid: The Carrier can take care of himself with his own Fighters, but loses part of his strike capability. This is safer approach, but there is a limit to how much you can carry your team. This is USN CV style.

As for escorting friendly Carrier: Well if they give much reward doing so, everybody would hump around friendly Carrier and then it would be a campy aerial battle wouldn't it?

This is just my personal opinion but: The Carrier captain is supposed to follow friendly Cruisers and Battleships, so that friendly Cruisers can quickly fall back and defend if there's a threat coming in for the Carrier. If the Carrier captain hangs too far back, and friendly Cruisers escorts him, he robs the team of valuable firepower that could be used on the front line.

I agree with you, but I'm not suggesting a big reward, for exactly that reason. I've gone back to try and defend the carrier/s because they haven't moved up with the rest of the fleet and are vulnerable, and if the rest of the fleet loses them they generally lose the game as well.

Give more XP/score based on aircraft kills using ship AA.  So Cruiser buddies get fair compensation for escorting BB's and CV's.  Right now it's a very important job (especially considering carrier rush is common) and the CV's who provide you with critical AA support often get, tiddly winks in XP.  When really, they played a major role.

Exp for planes taken down by AA should not be increased, you would only understand if you took time to test out the AA mechanics yourself.

Not quite, it's just hard to determined what is meant to be protected CV.

stay within range?

or firing ship that targeting CV?

A whole lot more to be programed.

The more reasonable point earner in my opponent  is 'shore bombardment'

have shore base on each side, and get score by bomb it with giant main gun.

fact is, naval gun accuracy in WW2 is fairly low, especially in ship-ship engagement. you fire 100 round, hit one or two is lucky enough (well, except in close range combat)

so, one of major key role of naval gun is shore bombardment.

Maybe if they gave for example a 1km radius around the carrier. Any aircraft shot down by the escorting cruisers will give a 50% extra xp. Difference isn't truly major but I can see people abusing this so, it most likely won't work.
