Need some pointers on how to use Independence

So i recently upgraded from Bogue to Independence,

While happily trolling IJN carriers on my Bogue, it dawn upon me after several matches that i can't do the same against IJN carriers with my Independence. I have to completely switch my play style from Bogue.

1) I can't chase TB bombers anymore since i'll be matchup against higher tier Hiryuu who has faster ships torpedo bombers

2) I can't shoot down IJN fighters anymore since i'll be matchup against Hiryuu who has high damage fighters.

And since 3 of my first matches on my Independence had all been against Hiryuu. Can any USN carrier players give me some advice on how to play USN carrier on mid tier level? Or should i just skip all the way to high tier carrier since i can always grind on my other ships and i do have around 200k of free xp available.

Thanks!

Firstly, I can assure you Ranger is even worse as at least Independence is fast.

Also, take my advice with a grain of salt as on Carriers, the best person you can consult is Halken.

Using Bomber setup/Universal setup in US carrier is pointless until Tier 8, so I will talk about the 2/0/1 setup.

I suppose you had no problem dealing with Ryujos, so I will talk about how to deal with higher tier fighters - There are a couple of things you can do.

- Team up with the other CV

Obviously the best tactic. Here's an example how it worked:

 yqf4GL3.jpg

The Other Ranger was using Bomber setup, And the Taiho is using the 3/2/2. So Basically I am alone against a Tier 9 CV. So I told the Ranger to stick with my fighters when he attack - And Once the Taiho decided to engage Bombers I instantly Go in and chase after his fighters - and he suffered heavy losses as he was caught off guard multiple times. I lose a lot as well - but I manage to get the Taiho to try to kill me instead of my team - which he failed and Take the pressure off my team.

Although it's Random Teammates, people tend to help out if you ask kindly. See if you have some luck to meet a good teammate or even a Pubstar like Halken :)

- EQUIPMENTS and PERKS. They matters. If you think you keep getting out-tiered, use these the Module that buff Fighter's Damage and the perk that increase Damage if your plane is slower than the enemy fighters.

In this case, F3F had a speed if 125 knots - while the A6M2 had 143 knots - and this will help you fight against them (At least stand a chance).

As for the Torpedo Bomers - B5N2 had a speed of 111 knots, so Guess not such a problem? For the D3A2s, Well it just depends in your positioning - but many Cruisers bring Fighters these day (Which affect their accuracy), so you can decide the priority if them.

- Postioning. Now This is the most important thing for USN CV.

Because so many people these day in IJN CV tend to kill CV first - my tactic is to Spread the fighters out to the East and West edge of the map to prevent any Surprise attack - While the Dive Bomber go to the middle to scout (Attack if needed).

Once you see the rough direction of the attack instantly re-group your fighters (Remember, although I spread out I never let them go too far out from each other.) and decide how to repel them. It's up to you then.

Now, One more thing.....

USN Mid Tier Carrier (Bogue, Independence and Especially Ranger) is pretty underwhelming when facing a IJN CV. You said you had Loads of Free XP, I would suggest you to skip to Lexington which even the Default Setup is Incredible (2/1/1).

BUT if you can suffer go through these 3, I am pretty sure you will even be a better player when you see the Heaven of Tier 8 to Tier 10. See whether you want to save the Free XP for the Brit Line/German Line or on some "Underwhelming ships".

If I was you I won't skip it. QB once said something very true - You NEVER Free XP a tank unless it's Unplayable or Super bad (*Look at AMX40 and ARL V39*). You Always save them up for the Grinds and use a Elite Tank once you unlock it(Ship in this case). Hope this helps.

Thanks for the thorough reply.

Yes, it feels very disheartening right now going against T7 carriers going from Bogue. I don't think Bogue is nearly as bad as everyone say since i could troll IJN carriers just fine. Against T7 fighters, they could 1v1 my fighters and inflict huge damage, and they still have more reserve in their hangar than I do.

What i have done so far is try to deploy my fighters within my teammates' radius of AA defense, just to even out the damage output. I used to shot down around 20 enemy planes on my bogue, and seeing that now i could only shot down 4-5 planes instead is a horrible feeling.

I'll try a few more games tonight, but it doesn't look good.

Indi was a monster back in CBT prior to the CV "fixing"

Indi really felt like how a CV should be.

Question, should I free xp straight to Indi or earn my wings through Le Ol'Langley and The Bogus?

Langley is a fun ship. Don't skip it.

Bogue though..... Well you can decide.

That's being literal or sarcastic towards Langley?

No I am not. It had a Torpedo Bomber Squadron and a Fighter Squadron at the same time - Which is Fantastic as you will probably only use Dive Bombers Until Tier 8.

Watching the Beautiful US Torpedo Spread is such a pleasure

As a previous USN CV veteran i would recommend upgrading your fighters with equipment and commander skills. Higher tier matches shouldn't be as common as you mention it but if it does happen keep your fighters near your allies for maximum defence (As you should already be doing). Only engage while near friendly AA and you should win.

Bogue seems to be worse because you have to decide between strike and air dominance but having 2 fighter squads will pown any IJN squadrons. Best play is to keep them near the enemy carrier to prevent them launching/returning. The IJN carrier will soon run out of fighters or wont have any in the first place. Use your DBs on BBs as a priority target or the enemy CV.

Bogue has one of the most accurate dive bombers out of every carrier in-game,don't waste the DB on BBs go for small ships. Make full use of the small bomb radius which you can't anymore after bogue.

HE bombs from bogue's DBs do lots of hurt to DDs and CAs.

If I recall correctly, Bogue,Independence, Ranger and Lexington were built as escort carrier so it doesn't have a capability to project fire power like Essex and Midway. So, until you get to essex and midway, US CV are good for protecting your team mate from bomber and torp bomber. It is not a fun job but that what those ship design to do.
