"wherever there is a mess, the destroyer runs first. she is expendable and dangerous." - John Steinbeck

No, this ain't the Allen M. Sumner Laffey (DD-724) that went out of the shipyard somewhere in 1944 and earned the moniker "The ship that would not die", but this was her predecessor in name and for all she's worth, I believe she's technically the first US destroyer to be made of grit that you can't help but shed manly tears at what she had done during her service tenure. its not every day you get to see manly tear inducing ships, let alone destroyers with one of them being the action off Samar during the Leyte campaign where gigantic lulz happened so hard that Halsey almost accidentally the CVE's left alone with nothing more than their fast and frail escorts when he ran after the decoy force. although she was whacked by the fast battleship Hiei, she did her share of naval duties until the very moment she sank and that's coming from a destroyer no less

to be fair though, her ship class, the Benson, was a typical solid destroyer for the USN and it was neither insanely good nor very terribad, they were just... plain good. about 30 or so were built of these things and all served to their utmost best with four going down but still, out of 30 ships made, only four went down is something you honor and have a small measure of pride as design wise they were solid. Laffey was one of the four that went down, her grave during the naval brawl at Guadalcanal, but even in that retrospect she still did her run.

from the Bethlehem shipyard at San Francisco, she had about 1,620 long tonnes of weight, speed of about 38 knots, her main armament of 5 inch (130mm) guns, 20mm Oerlikons, torpedo tubes and a couple of depth charge launchers, one pair being racks (how to depth charge using the racks: put depth charges on rack, preset them to depth, try to get above enemy sub, release away) at her aft section and the most being projectors aka slingshots that throw the depth charges into the water without getting close to the sub. her complement is basically the same to her big sister and her other little sisters so there's nothing that special for her vessel wise rather than her service run.

after her shakedown cruise, she was immediately sent into the void as a screen where she kinda saw the carrier Wasp go down and had picked up survivors to transport them to the nearest base then and afterwards, she saw her first brawl during the slugfest at Cape Esperance where she was one of the destroyers that accompanied the cruisers there to stop any reinforcement by the Japanese to Guadalcanal since they kinda went derp during the first Battle of Savo Island and nearly squeezed the necks of their marines because of that derp that kinda smashed the crap out of them at that battle. as fate had started it, an enemy battlegroup was also there and after a few minutes going GQ, lulz happened, with one of them thinking Laffey and another destroyer were going to go on a torpedo run and went in herself for one without even notifying anyone due (was said that was due to faulty radio on the receiving end). in the height of the moonlight battle, she whacked Aoba with her guns and come by morning, she was kinda relatively intact although one of her cousins, the Gleaves class Duncan was going under, one of her sisters Farenhoit got banged up hard and the Brooklyn class Boise was still kinda intact after being whacked herself by the Japanese heavy cruisers as she was a light cruiser. the enemy however had a more painful loss as Furutaka was going under (reason why I call Furutaka "eyeball" was because of this battle her searchlight was so bright she was basically showing herself to be THE target and it aint helping that as she was being railed, she suffered a boom that made all of the US battlegroup blast her some more), Aoba running away severely damaged and Fubuki went under.

even as that had raised the morale of the whole allied forces in Guadalcanal, there was still much to be done. she had her momentary escort duties and joined a battlegroup as one of the destroyers and participated in her last but most epic battle yet: the naval brawl of Guadalcanal. she was one of the destroyers that blasted her IJN counterpart Akatsuki and after a few runs at the moment suddenly encountered Hiei as she was also turning on her searchlights and was under fire by other US ships, suffering a close call that both nearly collided which would prove really REALLY bad for the destroyer. she got close, blasted her with everything she unloaded at surface ships, 5 inch guns, her modest secondaries, MG, her torpedoes, in a close range slugging match that had blasted Hiei's bridge and superstructure so bad that the commander of the Japanese fleet that was there severely injured him on the bridge and killing his staff. perhaps one of the fewer merits of that close range slugfest was that Hiei's secondaries could not blast the lower profile destroyer. after which she ran away in the night after doing that and suffering hits, especially from a 14 inch shell from Hiei. was possibly THE most manliest feat a destroyer could do at the time. she encountered another group of cruisers and destroyers, got herself whacked by gunfire and went down ingloriously, going boom in the process as the fires reached her magazines.

to her benefit though, Hiei was severely damaged from her actions and the gunfire of her allies and her blasting the bridge and superstructure ensured that the CO of the enemy battlegroup was injured and he was limited in commanding everyone in the group although Hiei eventually went down from scuttling. it was somewhere in this brawl that her sister Kirishima was also whacked by the Washington after giving South Dakota a massive beating after she had no electric power because someone aboard her went derp. even as Laffey sank, her name successor, the Allen M. Sumner Laffey, survived and gained her insane moniker but if we talk about more manly tear inducing feats by destroyers of the US, then those at that action off Samar would gain that honor, especially the destroyer Johnston that first went in a near-insane torpedo run to protect the CVE's that were running away.

even unto this day, I still find what the Benson Laffey did to be insane, getting up close and personal with a battleship of all the vessels in the water and started pummeling it and to this retrospect, I don't have a good idea how the game's Benson performs if its either bad or its just plain good but not reaching insanely good.

that is all.

Johnston's feat though... Went back with guns blazing as ordered by their commander even after launching their fish to the enemy armada :hiding:

true, nothing could beat that insane feat for the US ships but to be fair, the Benson Laffey was the first to start the manly tear inducing runs by blasting an enemy fast battleship as much as she could. in close range. in the moonlit dark.

but rereading this though, I'm starting to hope the Benson is a solid ship in-game.

:great:

I DID say I'm bad at formalities once tho XD

do try to make what I write 'colorful' at most.

@Syanda I need to read info of her first before I can get to work 'crazy-ing' what I can write. its not full history since I tend to forget ship stats but their actions I can remember XD

am still finding the bare bits on the N class DD's on webs (am starting to wish I had info and archive raiders as contacts) as well as Syanda's ship of interest before I go lulz over this dead XD

Renown Class Battlecruiser

Nice candidate for tier 5 Premium (Light Batlecruiser)

I refuse to want the Renown as a goald sheep. just... BLOODY NAW! (insert forced English accent)

I can understand the Repulse herself but her big sister? nope nope nope.

I said class....

Might between those 2

(and Courageous-class battlecruiser might do as well (only 4 main guns in 2 turrets))

She's a doozy. Behold, the ship that attempted to assassinate the President of the United States.

Great post Evyl,

I love the story of the Laffey. That intro pic is from the box art of the Dragon 1/350 kit which I bought 4 years ago when it was released.

Consider me motivated to continue the build.

FG
