[just for fun] if we gonna have submarine, how to blance it out?

I already know that they not going to put submarines in WOW.

but, let's just think for fun, "if we gonna have submarine, how to balance it out?"

 

how about....

- have lowest HP of all, (weakest armor)

- have highest concealment of all

- have speed faster than BB, but slower than CL

- torpedo stat is like of DD of that nation

- can fire maximum 4 torpedoes (2 by 2 or full salvo 4)

- can stay submerge for about 5 min, longer than that, it's will drain out ship HP (or force surfacing)

     - while submerge, it can be detect only by DD and CL

     - while submerge, it can be attack only by DD and CL (like AA and secondary gun system, just get close and depth charge will drop automatically)

     - once fire a torpedoes, it position revealed to all ship

- Need to stay surface for about 1 - 2 min before go submerge again (think about WW2 sub, need to surface to charge their battery)

     - while surface, it can be attack by all kind of ship

- submarine can't attack another submarine if both are submerge

- submerge submarine can attack surfacing submarine

Here's how a realistic WWI/WWII submarine will look like in World of Warships.

 

Firstly, take a destroyer.

 

Now, halve its hitpoints

 

Now, remove all but one or two of its guns.


Now, decrease its maximum speed by half on the surface - so, about 15-20kts

 

Now, decrease that by half again when it submerges.

 

Now, make it so that it can only fire torpedoes directly forward and directly behind, and has to turn in order to aim the torpedoes.

If only they would implement our idea of submarines wielding krakens who shoots submarines which explodes into krakens.

Concerning on the topic, regardless it will be implemented or not, I would like to add that;

- every recon plane should be able to detect and attack subs with depth charges, keep 'em busy dodging,

- they can only submerge to the firing depth, so they're still vulnerable to torps

- very limited torps ofc, so they don't spam

In the spirit of the thread:

 

Your ideas are all terrible.

 

Ok, they arent all terrible, but lets try for something that doesnt involve massively overbuffed stats.

  • Speed: Slow, really slow, 15 knots surfaced slow. 10knots submerged. Advanced spawn positions will have to be worked out
  • Stealth is going to have a few tradeoffs. You will only be stealthy at depth (can still be picked up by a destroyer sonar consumable), at attack depth nearby destroyers will pick you up on hydrophones (~4-5km) and Cruiser and BBS at a shorter range (~2-3km), with periscopes deployed everyone within 2km will pick you up. Aircraft directly overhead (~0.5km) will also spot you at attack depth
  • Torps can only be launched at attack depth, available tube configuration to match historical configuration
  • Torps to have relatively short range (seriously guys, allowing invisible type 93 spam is a bad idea, and you can only get halfway accurate targeting data under this range anyway)
  • Without the periscope deployed vessel positions can be located by hydrophones (gives only a range and bearing line on UI, does not actually display ship, has limited range) or by sonar, which will display the ship, but alert all ships within sonar range that you have just detected them, sonar consumable to have a cooldown and short activation span.
  • Destroyers using sonar will be visible
  • Depth changes will be slow, 30+ seconds between "silent" depth and attack depth prevents subs being able to try to instantly vanish, and will allow dive bombers (we'll pretend the dive bombs work at attack depth) and depth charged armed destroyers to counterattack, destroyer depth charges will work at any depth, but at "silent" depth subs will have more time to evade the falling charges
  • Limited oxygen on board requires surfacing every 5 or so minutes
  • Subs can detect and attack each other

 

Thats pretty damn complex, and Im sure it would still have balance issues.

The same way you balance the Waffle E-100 in WoT.

You simply can't balance it in a way that is not frustrating for both the player and the enemy.

WoWs is an arcade game, looking back to good old "Battlefield 1942" it was quit simple to implement Submarines.

If you want to be historical accurate, maybe an arcade game isn´t the game you should play.

The difference between BF1942 and this game is the WoWS focuses on the fleet environment, whereas submarines tended to either work as a lone wolf or as part of a wolf pack. While today you will often see them as part of a carrier group this was no the case during WW2.

 

It's been said time and time again, and the response will be the same. There will be no subs in this game.

If we made it so that you could *drive* an actual kraken, catch a submarine, chew on the end of it and then suck out all the sea men, it would be fricken awesome.

There's some clubs in Melbourne where you can do pretty much that.
