So I doubt this would have been really used in RL (but hey, it's WG and since when does something have to exist in RL for it to be possible?) but I think it'd be a neat feature to add the use of a ships anchor to the game. It could be used for dodging torps dropped from planes or dive bombers and making sharp turns however there would have to be variables and drawbacks. These could be things like the depth of water (i.e. on the Ocean map it could take 20s to hit the bottom but near a land mass on another map it could be a second or so) and when your anchor has been deployed it takes a little while to get going, subsequently making you vulnerable for a while.

No, it would not have been used in RL because dropping the anchor at speed will just result in damage to the ship and a broken anchor chain. Whatever happened in the Battleship movie is completely physics-defying and wrong.

BB's can already do tight turns even without anchors (even if you have to defy physics with that lol)

Plus there is already a thread about this and there was much rage!!!!

again? /sigh

Not this again...

*jumps overboard

Well I did use the search function and read through all 3 pages of the suggestion threads where the issue of an anchor was never raised so whatever.

the issue is, that you become a vulnerable target if you drop your anchor.. and like what Syanda said, it will leave a huge gaping hole on your ship if you drop your anchor at full speed

Think about this for a moment, driving at cruise speed in a car on a highway throw a chained hook that is anchored to your car at the closest lamp-post, that is what will happen to you car and ship (that is if the anchor still stays attached or your ship doesn't snap in half from the impact).

Make it a Level 5 Skill, just say in the description "for people wanting to try to do hand brake turns in a warship"

But don't add that the result will be either a snapped chain with no effect, or it rips your bow off.

I have a better hair-brained scheme.

Just aim all guns forrard then fire.

The recoil will stop your forward momentum.

That's basically Nelson class or Richelieu class, but that won't stop a ship with more than 30000 ton

Well, how about if the all the planes on the carriers were chained down facing forrard and had their engines on full throttle?

That's gotta stop a carrier.

Actually the ship wouldn't be brought to a complete halt by dropping the anchor, The anchor is dragged by the ship when dropped and it's the length of the chain with the anchor that brings the ship to a halt so in game it wouldn't have any immediate effect on the ship but raising the ship's anchor would result in the ship speed being hindered considerably resulting in the player becoming a shot magnet.

I would add that when a ship does drop anchor it certainly wouldn't be at full speed.
