Unicum's Destroyer tips needed

I have played wows almost 5 years. I started with BB line and then gradually transfer to Cruisers, CVs and finally DDs. I am currently doing good with BB CA CV but with DD, it's a different story. At low tier I can still manage to get good ranking position, outplaying-bullying enemy DDs and contribute to team's victory but when I reach higher tier, things getting more and more difficult for me. I understand the fact that the higher the tier, the more radars, CV will appear so it's very frustrating for DDs. Currently I prefer the steathy playstyle, staying undetected and launching torpedoes at the enemy. My most-played DD is Gearing and I am doing good with her.

I think my problem is positioning. Sometime I get a cap and then I just stay around that cap to spot for my team and defend the cap if necessary. Even if i didnt get the cap (enemy radars, CV, or enemy DD out-contest me), I still stay around try to reclaim that cap and spot. When wandering around caps, I sometime eat torp. losing considerably HP or even sent back to port. I didn't move to another cap because I want to stay and spot for my team and/or that cap is too far away and my teammates will lose sight if I leave. Sometime I feel being stuck because I dont know where to go next.

So I am asking for guide, tips, tricks from unicum DD players, mostly for torp-boat but hybrid or gun-boat are also welcomed. The more detail the better. Thanks in advance :fish_book:

You might also want to check out Destroyer KuroshioKai on Youtube.

He is very good DD player and has informative tutorial videos on how to play DDs effectively.

Yep Kuro is a great resource as he explains his thinking in detail right from the start.

I reckon the best advice is not going to be specific or detailed, its strategic or foundational.

Contest the objectives but DON'T DIE. That's the basis of good DD play for me.

You are really powerful in end-game situations, but you can only leverage that if you are alive. If you are in danger of getting killed early then back off and survival becomes the focus until things progress. Its amazing how many games you can claw back if you are alive at the end, especially if you are the only DD left alive.

Managing caps/points is vital because you are the best ship on the team to do that. However, in nearly every situation, getting a cap is always lower priority to surviving. If the enemy get it and you can step on it 20 seconds later in safety then they have not gained much at all. But as always don't die to do it.

For me damage is secondary but still important. I'll take it where I can and look for opportunities to kill enemy dds in particular, but staying alive and managing caps/points is always the priority. Note that sometimes that means aggressively trying to kill low health ships for the points.

Its not ships but this video is very very similar in terms of what you are trying to do in terms of managing aggression while staying alive till the end. It sets out a framework of how to think about what you should be doing. It also highlights the need to change between attack/defend as the game changes, and maintaining situational awareness.

There are tactical things to do about ship position near caps, reverse into caps, don't be side on so you can eat torps etc especially if you are facing an enemy with RPF. If you are in the cap and located then be aware you are telling them pretty well exactly where you are so expect torps. Conversely if you do have rpf then you have a great tool to really hassle unspotted DDs trying to cap.

Good luck with it.

I always have RPF on my torpboat and it gives a lot useful information, especially pinging enemy location for teammate's HE bomber :cat_bubble:
