First I decided to use that magic coupon in the armoury to get myself a ship to use in that KotS mission set.

2020-09-20 (19).png

Then my first ever 10 point captain arrived. I just need to figure out what to select as a 4-point skill. I'm guessing concealment doesn't add much to US BBs.

2020-09-20 (18).png

Then I finished the Hawkins grind so got to use up my precious few port slots. Of course it's first game was a tier 8 game where my flank had a red Chapayev, Myoko, Nagato and 2 tier 8 battleships.

But at least my last gasp salvo set the Myoko on fire 3 times, and DC was on cooldown it seems because I reached up from hells depths to burn him to the waterline and drag his crew screaming to hell with me.

2020-09-20 (17).png

Don't worry though. I'll be playing the Prinz Eugen in co-op for a while until I'm a bit more comfortable with it.

Oh and I finally finished getting a win in all my tier 5+ ships.

Congrats!

Concealment Expert is almost always the first T4 skill on most ships.

On BBs the other pick is Fire Prevention, which I got first if it's a BB that's spotted from the moon, i.e. Fuso or Nagato.

Otherwise I get concealment first and recommend players do concealment most of the time as it's a good idea to get used to playing with that as a BB instead of getting into bad habits like sailing around assuming you're perma-spotted.

Either way 14 points should be CE and FP, then after that I recommend BoS, so standard BB Captain looks like this:

PM (or EL if you have invincible turrets - I'm yet to find a ship with them though)

AR, EM

SI, BoS

CE, FP.

Some people these days recommend ditching BoS to pick up JOAT or High Alert but TBH I think that's stupid as it assumes you use heal and repair optimally everytime and no one does that.

Yeah I ended up going with Fire Prevention. Just because I know I love nothing more than seeing a New York or Texas in my Konigsburg knowing they're going to be a nice BBQ.

I think the commander is Incoming Fire Alert, Expert Marksman, Superintendent and Fire Prevention.

I'll probably try to stay patient for a while to get to 14pt before I pick up another skill to get Concealment Expert though I imagine they will be in command of the New York by then (I'm only up to the South Carolina on the tech tree).

CE is good so you can operate reasonably close to the enemy. Nothing better than being able to drop out of vision if you need to. Well besides ambushing an enemy cruiser who has wandered forwards.

That suggestion only worked well for the pre-nerfed Lion & Conqueror because the only thing that actually could kill them was their own lengthy consumable cooldowns.

I said pre nerfed because the citadel nerf outweighed the buffs on consumable cooldowns (and Conqueror's heal potency). I mean recently I managed to cit a Lion with Tallinn's AP from 5 km away. I know it's from a very short range, but with 180mm AP shells?

I agree BoS is definitely a must for BBs. Because the fire damage is crazy nowadays.

IFA is a poor pick (IMO) as it means you end up relying on it.

It's 1 point that if you have good Situational Awareness and and on the lookout, you could spend elsewhere.

But I understand the decision.

Having said that I don't pick up PT unless there's nothing else as I don't think it's reliable information and I am either watching who everyone is focusing or I'm assuming they're aiming at me.

Reducing chance of turrets or torp tubes getting knocked out, that's something I can't just mitigate with skill.

FYI if you did want to respec, I'm pretty sure there was a discount on atm, not sure when it ends though.

Also with the captain perk rework, there'll likely be a free one with that.

*shrugs* goodluck mate!

Yeah I think the Texas and maybe one other captain might have IFA. And well she is one of my early ships so I didn't know much better.

But to be honest I don't mind having it too much. It is a little bit of warning to give me a chance to improve my angle, and with the way fights seem to take place at longer range it is something that lets me not jump at shadows when I get targeted up by 3 or 4 ships. I haven't been losing turrets to worry much about that, and of course playing German and British cruisers as my main lines losing torpedo tubes is more like losing the desperation weapon. I'll probably not bother re-spec'ing the captain. Save that gold for more tempting targets.

Not sure if you know but you can use any captain in a premium ship at no penalty and no need to retrain. (Within nation)

Usually I keep mine to same type, i.e. the Captain I use on Texas is the US BB captain from whereever I'm upto on that line, Atago captain I use my Zao captain, etc.

Yeah. I have 2 US BB Captains. One in the South Carolina who will eventually take over the Texas to grind some XP later, and the Texas captain who will take over the New York when I reach tier 5.

I only have 3 US ships atm with the Phoenix being the other ship.

I figure the ships below tier 5 are fine with low captains (not that my German and British cruiser captains are even at 10-pt). So at the moment I've swapped the commander I got with the Prinz Eugen with the Nurnburg captain to try to get them up to 10+ (currently about to reach 9) and the Yorck which is my highest tech tree ship also has an 8-pt captain.

My other premium which is the Exeter still has the Captain she came with, but the Emerald and now Devonshire have better captains already.

The only other lines I'm looking at are IJN BB (where I'm still at the Kawachi) and RN BB (where I'm only playing the Orion in co-op because being a CV target in it in randoms really sucks).

So my Texas captain still has a little time to go before I go back to a bad captain.

That's what I mean, that Exeter captain might as well not be used now. Exeter doubles up with your Devonshire build now so you can use both ships for the one captain.

As for lowbie ships with lowbie captains, 100% that's ok but if you have a premium like Texas, might as well keep training up your highest US BB captain.

Once you reach 19 points (max) all commander XP you earn is able to be used on any captain, so your goal should always be getting those first one or two captains up to 19 whole you grind.

Goodluck mate

I know for you guys this isn't really a big deal. And yes it is co-op without swarms of player DDs roaming the low tiers looking to finish campaigns.

But it was my first game in her, so yes she is totally stock and the captain didn't even have any skills working. And it's my first 6 figure haul. So I'm happy.

Scored my first Tier X kill today. And yes, I realise I have about 15k damage in a Tier VIII with 2 kills, but in my defence it is 2 kills and I'm still sailing.

My Prinz Eugen now has 2 random battles up, and this was the first in a top tier game.

Oh, and I ran into a couple of forummers on Saturday while I was trying to clear my Nurnburg multiplier for fun. So that was good.

The first 4pt on USN BB should always been CE. Sure you can spec FP, but their concealment are rather good, and you can be a lot more closer thus offering more opportunities.

Also, scrap that Eugen. All Hail the Hipper.

The Prinz Eugen has been good to me so far. Although I did just manage to have a game where my full HP Yorck played distraction for a 1k odd HP Hipper in a tier IX game. Apparently the enemy team was much more interested in shooting at me then taking the Hipper out. I did hear the Donkey call onto the quick commands too. :cap_like:

Reserve captains slots now full. Captain Bad Advice is now happily in command of the Leander. I might get the Hood for Jingles.

This tier VIII stuff is easy. I don't know what everyone complains about. Great teams, I don't have to do much, all the tier X's carry me.

Yes, this is turning into a log of a new player's achievements through starting the game.

Bit of an expensive day today, but I've finally gotten to my 1st non-premium tier V BB. And got to my first tier V DD today. Also got out of the South Carolina. But the Orion is still taking it's sweat time to get finished.1939647236_2020-10-10(5).thumb.png.ac429b470ea39059ff7c3d0858c6968c.png1954551317_2020-10-10(6).thumb.png.ffdf0bf3650f3c8d5b7400b028e9b45d.png430632268_2020-10-10(7).thumb.png.0b4dded963bc34b229c61af80eeb0f14.png

And it took a while. But I finally had a 100k game in randoms. Mmmm, nice juicy BBs giving broadsides with me having just enough angle to get all turrets to bare.145078549_2020-10-10(1).thumb.png.84a3f9be002b1a1a0aeec3d6143f3124.png
