Hi guys,

Just a quick question.

I remembered cruisers were so much easier to dev strike back in the days in a BB(think around 2016/17ish), nowadays i'm just constantly getting overpens except for the odd one where RNGesus actually hits the citadel (even in training room against a stationary target not all salvos resulted in citadel hits larf)

What changed and which patch was it that changed?

No actual changes to BB AP have happened in regards to CAs, more BBs with better pen (often higher calibre guns) and a bigger variety - definitely. There are also far more cruisers and particular with little armour in the game.

Only changes I'm aware of is they changed how BB AP over 280mm works against DDs (except Harugumo and Khaba) it's limited to 10% of the DDs max health per shell. This is so you don't get a random pen with a BB that causes 1/3rd or more of the DDs HP to disappear.

I do 'feel' similar to you in regards to overpens, but I can't support it with facts.

Guns can be too big. If you are vsing CL/As, a Fuso or New Mex is arguably a better choice than Warspite or Bayern.

Thin armour ships, and having big guns  switch to HE ; each and every time I hear BB players complain about their shells overpen on Smolensk , Indy, Mino and some I just got amused .

There actually was a significant change made in patch 0.7.2, which was released in March 2018.

The patch notes mentioned nothing much except a small nondescript sentence that said "Enhanced the interaction of shells and armour during contact". That was it. No mention of what was changed or how it would affect players. Whatever was changed also brought the unintended side effect of causing some BBs with low citadels to receive more damage due to weird underwater citadels and required WG to fix that. It was also the patch that changed the detonation mechanics to requiring to be under 75% hp. Before it was able to happen at 100% hp. Fun and engaging....... :Smile_sad:

The general consensus after the change was that citadels were much harder to come by when shooting at BBs. From memory I would agree with that. From one day to the next citadels were no longer a certainty when shooting at broadside BBs.There were several threads on here and the other forums with people asking along the lines of "what has happened I cant get citadels anymore". Many were confused as to how it could be called "enhanced", if it means the player gets less citadels. In my experience it was very noticeable shooting against BBs, but not a lot changed against cruisers. It was just something we all got used to. Plus with ships in game now with good accuracy and high pen like Krem, Thunderer, Ohio, Slava, Champagne, Stalingrad and Petro landing reliable cits is pretty easy if you can aim well.

I can only speak for my own game experience, but I still see many cruisers now when showing too much side getting one shot or close to it with only one salvo. Plus the addition of all these "mini overmatch" 457 mm guns on BBs means that cruisers armour is worth less and less these days when facing a BB with these guns.

Actually the same, especially at mid tier , playing Kongo, Fuso and Nagato ( and the same for big gun USS BB at mid to short range ) , its fairly easy to get their AP to overpen on the like tiers' CL even back then , its getting worse over the years with bigger guns, faster shells, and higher penetration ( French, Italian, Soviet, and plenty others )

Reading the above my guess would be that prior to those changes the shell/armour interactions were bugged so that some sort of armour value was ignored or shell fuse timer...

But that's purely speculation on my part.
