Summer Tokens - The Whale Thread

Disclaimer: I am Max_Battle, Fat Whale and All Day Gamer. I'm sorry if you have a life. I envy you. I don't. I am a single man who lives alone (temporarily at parents) and no one depends on me for anything. Every cent I get can be spent on me without guilt. If you have a family, wife, girlfriend, boyfriend, Horsegirl or anyone else like that in your life I envy you so don't complain about me whaling cuz I have only gaming in my life!

So I'm looking at Summer Tokens and how to get them.

I've looked through the ways to buy them.

I've looked through the armoury for how to spend them.

Just a quick note about buying tokens outright. I just bought what looked like a "Once only, day 1 purchase" of just tokens. After I bought it another smaller, cheaper bundle popped up. Seems you have to buy the 50 first then you can buy the 10. 
I think I was wrong - I can see both at same time now.

You can get a small smattering of bonus tokens at the moment form buying normal stuff you might Whale up anyway.

I am going to whale a little, and hate myself later.

 

I'm looking at these four.
 

Normal premiums. Guaranteed a premium and also guaranteed one you don't have. Nothing rare about the ships though. Just straight 180 tokens for something T8 you don't have. Couple there I wouldn't mind and don't have, but seems a waste to spend so much on a special event with no rare drops.

 

Couple of rare chances. Far lower cost in tokens but no guaranteed ship drop. Says a chance of unique commanders but I seem to remember they don't have bonus skills? I don't know if any of these ships are worth gambling on?

 

I don't know about CVs. I only have Saipan from this list and Enterprise is a rare drop. 20 tokens a gamble, no guarantees of a ship. The chance to get an ungettable ship is appealing.

 

Christmas is early. Cheap gamble at 12 tokens. Chance (however small) of several ungettable ships, including Missy. This is of the greatest interest to me, even if the chances are very small.

from the look of those purchases and options, calculated from previous 2 yrs, the first annual yrs was a blast and rewarding

the best chance of return value is the  Santa Big Gift chest then Premium Ship t8; but even so, RNGodness had to smile upon you too!

The reason is because the Santa Big Gift can also drop those rare ship like the Nikolai, the Grem, the MO but also any t5 and above Premium ship + the cost value of only 12 token compared to 180 token

13 non-ship in Santa's Big Gift Container, 10 in Air Supply container, 8 in Lunar but the again, Santa's Big Gift has a HUGE selection of ships. That's where I got my Lenin (last Christmas).

Why would I buy this?

I'm not saying it wouldn't be funky to have a low tier secondary German BB (and that MAY be reason enough!) but, like... Tier 3 premium... on purpose...?

K.Albert quite good on its tier thou.. and then why bother on seal clubbing on very low tier?

Slow game and slow income too

and most of directives or missions unable to complete using this one too

Well, Australians might have a thing for Vampire because of her history.

Other would get the Konig Albert because it's the closest thing you can get to playing Nikolai.

And also the gimmick of the Konig Albert is that it's a Kaiser at tier 3.

The Kaiser is tier 4.

I have Vampire, and yes, cuz Aussie!

Mostly wondered why I would want a T3 BB premium. Don't think I'll bother, not when I could gamble for something ungettable.

Personally I don't have much faith in the Santa crates although I haven't invested into them.

What would the boat chance look like for the different crates?

That is the great unknown.

It's why I specifically say "gambling" so many times 😛

I don't want to encourage people to spend what they can't afford or get duped into acting because of FOMO.

It's pure gambling and the odds are unknown.

Well I'm not sure if they've rejigged the drop chances since they released these crates shortly after the CV rework, but Enterprise wasn't a rare drop then, so there is every chance it has the same drop rate as the other ships.  If someone really wants Enterprise, this is by far the highest chance you will have of getting it.  If you roll one of the other CV's and you already have that ship, then it will reroll for one of the other ships on the list.  If you have Kaga, Saipan, and GZ, then any ship you roll will be rerolled as the Enterprise.

Having said all that, it is still most definitely gambling, and you may well get zero ships in your five boxes.  The drop rate is likely about 1 in 10.

Konig Albert was removed for being OP.  If a T3 KM BB that is way too good for its tier appeals to you, then you may like to get it.  This is why they are offering this particular ship.

Vampire was also removed for being OP.  It is the best T3 ship in the game, and plays almost exactly like a mid-tier US DD.  It would be perfectly well balanced if they moved it to tier 4.  If you only ever play one T3 ship, it should be Vampire.  Plus it's Aussie, and was sunk in action, something that hasn't actually happened to too many RAN ships.

So, I bought 60 tokens for about $17.

I gambled those tokens (5 x 12) and got a T5 Premium + 1000 doubloons.

Exeter on the Premium shop is about $24 without a 10 point captain. You could argue a 10 point captain is worth 1500 doubloons.

So, $24 + 2500doubloons. At the moment you can buy 2500 doubloons with 5 tokens for $13.44.

$17 gambled.

$37 won.

Fat Whale gets lucky this time.

I'm ok with the "spend money to get a random T8 premium ship" thing. That's not so much gambling as asking WG to chose your ship for you. Unfortunately too many of the ships are CV to make it worth the risk. I'm better off buying Bayern or Mainz straight up.

I'm not ok with the "spend the money to maybe get a random premium ship" thing. That's is gambling, and as has been pointed out many timed before, gambling with no idea of the odds except that they are of course unfavorable because this is WG we are talking about here.

The only thing I wanted out of the whole event is the tropical Atlanta camo, and WG is very regrettably doubling down on the recent trend of not letting players buy special items outright and instead wrapping up everything behind bundles and lootboxes. So, yeah. No.

I get the distinct feeling this is pretty much a cash grab of an event, may be worth it if you get lucky but it's all a gamble and with the odds against you the chances aren't good unless you spend a significant amount.

I agree the random premium boxes aren't so bad, as you're sure to get a ship, but that just means they're less gambly than the really bad ones. When previous events for those boxes came by some people bought loads of containers and got pretty much nothing but flags, coal and camos.

Same - no gambling here either. Got Albert last night and will grab Vampire today, then the Atlanta island conversion after.
