@mademoisail has asked us to come up with ANZ or SEA historical events or holidays that she can use to make Forum Contests for us.

I'm sure I can some up with some Aussie ones, but what about The Philippines? What kind of dates have some Naval meaning for you?

Malaysians? What national dates do you have have that she could use to make a Forum Comp?

Surely some Chinese players have a date or two special to them that could turn into a competition?

(Not a complete list of South East Asian countries 😛 Please don't take offence if I didn't mention your homeland!)

At the moment, there are a lot of nationalities and cultures included under the SEA bracket. We will ALL benefit if we ALL benefit.

Complain if you want, whinge that your specific nation and your specific region and your specific town and your specific house and you specificially aren't given everything you want!

Or... get the chance to grab a couple of small free things for little to no effort!

Oh and if everyone could stay on topic that would be great as it's important to....

....HEY LOOK A SQUIRREL!

:Smile_teethhappy:

EDIT: Running tally of Events/Dates.

TBH in recent history, china didn't have too much of a naval tradition since the Qing government had officials who embezzled most of the naval funds and the KMT/CCP didn't really have a blue water navy outside of a few old gnevny class destroyers and i think one Leander class on the CCP's side and some Bensons/fletchers/Gearings on the KMT's side

if you had to name a few notable occasions that your typical chinese can think of on the spot...

battle of the Yalu river(yellow sea) for the sino-japanese war

the attack on HMS amethyst on the yellow river

I can only come up with 2 suggestions.

1, Battle of Java Sea (the first part).
Summary: It was reported the Japanese launched as much as 92 torpedoes in this battle. But only one of them actually hit, which resulted the sinking of the Dutch destroyer HNLMS Kortenaer.
The contest's objective: Dodge as many incoming enemy torpedoes in a single battle as possible, and survive

2. Naval Battle of Malaya (The Sinking of Prince of Wales & Repulse)
Summary: Long story short, this was the first case of planes vs surface ships engagement in actual battle in history (Pearl Harbor was more of a raid than a battle).
The contest's objective: Shoot down as many planes as possible without fighter's support. I mean historically speaking, that was exactly what happened to the Force Z, although the planes were land-based aircrafts, not CV-based.

Someone did it with Lyon, and Lyon doesn't have fighter if I recall.

But yeah that seems to be a really high bar.

And of course Prince of Wales being substituted by KGV is a heresy of the highest order!

Sent Miss Sail a list  of a few things just after she asked.

River Plate of course with the Achillies, Savo island and the loss of the Canberra,  kolombangara with Leander sinking an IJN cruiser.  There are a few other lost aussie ships that can be commemorated of course.

Sydney.

Perth.

Vampire.

Waterhen.

Is probably plenty I missed, and certainly need input from other nations.

How about one to commemorate Teddy Sheean's heroism aboard the HMAS Armidale in the Arafura Sea, Timor on 1 December 1942?

How about something to do with Emden's shenanigans during the first big blow?

I mean specifically the part played by Sydney in sinking Emden (well forcing her captain to ground her to prevent sinking.

I don't think many people here know/care about the Battle of Java Sea here because it only involved the Dutch, Americans, and Aussies against the Japanese. I mean during the Dutch colonisation at that time, the locals were mostly enslaved to work on the plantations. So I doubt the Royal Netherlands Navy enlisted the locals to be sailors.

Although during the land battles, some of the locals actually collaborated with the Japanese. And that was because we thought the Japanese were going to liberate us. But in the end, nope they did the exact opposite. And unlike the Dutch, the Japanese actually enlisted some of the locals into the army. Although the casualties among the locals were staggering due to this recruitment, it also gave way to the partisan movement to arm themselves properly enough to kick the (already demoralized due to the Hiroshima & Nagasaki Bombings) Japanese out.

The first thing I learnt about this battle was when the British government filed a complaint when the locals looted the wreck of Exeter. Because apparently all Royal Navy ships that were sunk are still the property of the British.

That's all ?

You can more holidays than that

I show you

Chakri Day (6 April) Before Yamato dies tomorrow on 7 April and the same day Ayutthaya Kingdom collapsed at night 8.00 p.m in 1767

13–15 April = Songkran Festival  (You know about Titanic sinking? And Ark Royal luanched) Traditional Thai new year, and the major holiday of the year. Many people return home for family reunions during this period 14th is Family Day

4 May         =  Coronation Day  Commemorates the coronation of King Maha Vajiralongkorn in 2019 and of his father, King Bhumibol Adulyadej, in 1950. Previously held on 5 May; cancelled in 2017

                        and re-established on 4 May in 2019 (beginning 2020)

3 June = Queen Suthida's Birthday

28 July = King Maha Vajiralongkorn's Birthday (same day USS Baltimore launched)

13 October = Commemorates the passing of King Bhumibol Adulyadej in 2016 or King Bhumibol Adulyadej Memorial Day  (You know that my king is the great beyond others)

23 October = Commemorates the passing of King Chulalongkorn in 1910. or King Chulalongkorn Day

5 December = King Bhumibol Adulyadej's Birthday Anniversary

These Thai's Holiday aren't count with Buddhist festivals
