Oh it's that Japanese training ship. Alright, off you go.

Speaking of secrets, i have a lot to tell you, but for now let's talk about her infamous problematic engine, which supposedly also lend her personality.

Admiral Hipper's powerplant is actually very good on it's own, lending output and performance on such compact scale compared to Diesel engines found on the earlier Deutschland-class, thanks to utilizing new technologies like superheated steam and high-pressure boilers (same tech that, i might add, is being pursued by the US Navy albeit later). However, as with many other German wonders like BMWs and Tigers, it's all let down by unnecessarily complicated electric system. The high-pressure boilers and the desire for improved maneuverability led to the expansion of automatic control. This was already partially established in connection with some wet-steam systems, but now its use was greatly expanded to include the regulation of air, water and fuel for the boilers. These systems became still more complicated by the increased "quality-requirements" of the feed-water in the boilers, regarding the maximum salinity, maximum density and oxygen content. For this reason, "closed" feed water cycles were installed everywhere, which were provided with degassing systems of different types, various regulating tanks and compensator cells. If this wasn't complicated enough, the boilers still needed to be able to be parallel connected for damage control purposes. All these new and complex machinery arrangements exceeded human reaction time and thus created an even greater need for automatic control systems.

Not only that, her maze-like system of cables goes alongside the even more maze-like pipes. You know how well salt water and electricity goes down together, just like Hipper and flat insults: Incredibly Poor. The chance of leak going off without detection are high due to this, and this pretty much sealed her reliability on "Absolute PITA" category.

This very complicated process and maintenance due to burden of electricity and others were also compounded by another letdown, the fact is the Kriegsmarine at this stage were on process of very rapid expansion, which led to insufficient training for her crew on these new wonders. These sailors were usually trained on older lower-pressure powerplants, and tried to do the same on this very different engine. The result is the very frequent breakdowns, and without necessary knowledge, the crew assumed it's the plants that are unreliable, not their wrong application.

So yes, to conclude, her engine, while a very delicate and advanced one, is let down by the usual problems: Very complicated additional systems and compounded by lack of experience on the crew. It is understandable why she always went to call you idiot in Azur Lane, as her service life is plagued by problems that are usually fine if treated nicely, not by some douchebag. Even one of her most successful raiding journey in 1940-41 is plagued by this, which cut another good part of her service short. This problem is not only present on her though, all German ship with steam power had this problem. The 1936 Class Destroyers (including Z23) were even worse, and Tirpitz also had it albeit on a lesser scale thanks to improvement and strengthened machinery.

Next on the list would be, uhh, her charade with HMS Glowworm.

Second part: Glowworm v. Admiral Hipper

As the encounter in itself is already well known, i just listed some interesting points about it

  • It is thought that the ramming is purely accidental. By this time, Glowworm is reduced to flaming wreck, without anyone on the helm and severe damage to her steering.
  • Contrary to popular belief, Glowworm's ramming is fairly inconsequential for the heavy cruiser. Admiral Hipper suffered one casualty (a sailor thrown overboard when the ramming occurs, and he was never found), damaged a torpedo tube, scraping some paint and started a minor flooding. On the British side however, the bow were crushed and her boiler later exploded, sinking the ship.
  • Glowworm's captain, Gerard Broadmead Roope, were awarded Victoria Cross posthumously for his brave action. Not only this was the first Victoria Cross awarded during WWII, but also it was  one of very few to have the award justified, in part, from a recommendation and supporting evidence provided by the enemy, in this case by Admiral Hipper's captain, Hellmuth Heye. He personally relayed the recommendation through the Red Cross to the British authorities.
