First brush with naval warfare gaming - post your story.

Interested in hearing your stories about your first encounters with naval warfare gaming - and subsequent encounters.  

 

In keeping with the structure of W.o.W.S. no subsims please (although '688 AS' *was* the bomb-diggity) 

 

For me it was 'Computer Bismarck' by SSI, which I found completely adsorbing.  Great game!

Awesome game back then. Great graphics for its time back when 16 color EGA resolution was the shizzles.

Harpoon - not the public release game, but the original that was made for Allied Navy Training way way back in 1990's. No graphics, all text, and it took an entire class to play one side of the battle. After that, any game that had ships and subs in it, I played it.

A game called Strike Fleet but very quickly moved onto the Harpoon series and spent the next ten years playing and modding for HC, H2/3 and was then involved with a bunch of guys who developed Command: Modern Air Naval Operations.

Cannot remember the title, but it was either a C64 game or early console.
You had to retake Leyte gulf at the start you selected supplies and aircraft carrier load out for bombers /attack planes amount of troops. then you had to secure landing zones along a map which started out with you using a battle ship to shell bunkers etc then landing troops to take the beachhead. Whilst cruising between landing zones you could be attacked by aircraft or encounter a battle group then you had to use fighters/bombers or AAA to defend.

 

Difficult game I couldn't ever secure the last beachhead.

SSI published a lot of great titles.  I remember this one - was good good good.
