DD IS THE HARDEST IN GAME CLASS, i am not recommend you play DD.... but if you insist

1. know when to open fire

2. know where to launch torpedo

3. no position mistake

you can watch youtube videos.... also EACH DD line have different flavour or gimmick.

DD DONT ALLOW MISTAKE, thus recommended for PRO or Masochist or mentally unstable person

if you want  A FAST, EASY PATH to destroy.... join the darkside

CV basically THE MOST EASY SHIP IN THE GAME

PEOPLE FEAR YOU

nothing can harm you except enemy CV itself

YOU LAUNCH PLANE, decide who to kill.... then kill them

You can, but of course due to size difference you cannot fight them one on one openly. Stealth and smokes are your trusty allies (well as I saw you are playing Asashio + grinding through the Royal Navy DD line), DDs are a late game ship (if I am not wrong), it becomes very strong in late game due to their speed and stealth and there were less enemies to harm its survival, try not to die early.

Asashio is a specialised anti BB destroyer with great stealth, so you can scout ahead of the fleet and torp their BBs, do not overextend as you are not fast at all compared to some of your T8 peers and your guns are not good enough to protect yourself from most gunboat DDs.  Try to anticipate the BBs movement, for example most BBs will try to get into the action as fast as they can at the early game so they will approach the flank with full speed, cover their path with your torps; BBs will also turn away and kite the moment they perceived that the incoming force is stronger, so you can torp the area where he is going to turn away and he will catch the torps with his broadside when he is U turning. Your deep water torps should net you good results if you anticipated their movement correctly since it's kinda fast and really stealthy, making the BBs having less time to react and dodge when they saw the torps. But since your torps cannot damage cruisers, just spot them and ask your team to focus it down.

For the Royal Navy DD line, you have a short duration smoke but it has quick cooldowns, so you can always pop it when needed. If you are in a T5 match Acasta is really powerful since it can utilize hit and run tactics using the quick cooldown smokes, and you can whittle down enemy DD's hp with your fairly useful guns. You need to know what kind of DDs you can dominate (such as IJN DDs) and what kind of DDs you should avoid clashing when you do not have smokes available (USN DDs/Soviet DDs). Your torps are short ranged so its only useful when you are ambushing someone (you can stealth torp when you reached Icarus). You can single launch your torps so you can use this gimmick to torp people through a narrow space or focus you torps on their bow if they are bow in. Your guns have fairly high chance of causing fire so when you are safe, shoot the enemy BB's superstructure to cause some fires.

well .. of course that is exactly where the problem is .. this game expect and in fact by design will only reward ( for real ) damage dealing but by nature of what it is DD is never the major damage dealer .. you can land hundreds of shoots and still got damage totaling what a BB can do in one or two salvo ; and of course all the other so call dd play are well play only, they reward none or at best very minimal and often come with high degree of danger induced, and as the only class of ship that had ZERO margin of error you cannot hope to absorb any mistake without paying a fair price or in may cases a certain death ..

So at this moment , put that damage dealing to the back stand , any DD player should put survival as first on  the agenda, and as for the next on the list .. well .. well .. well .. did I mention it already all those DD play , well they should be performed but they really do not reward, penalize by putting the DD always in danger .. so as a fellow DD player I cannot just say go do the DD play cause that's just like asking you to go die for others with no payback ( but that's too may other surface ships players keep shouting for and really they do not do their part to support )

In the end damage dealing require good tactical awareness and to position yourself properly before launching that torp or opening up with the guns .. yes its not going to be consistent, if enemy are smart and do not present you with the chance, you are then forced to either stay silent or shoot from position that likely will penalize you with heavy return fire its just the way how DD are as of this current state of the game

you just got the mind of some fkcing sick murderer to play this type, you don't show your self to a 1 vs 1 dual, u must do any thing to make some one els suffer, burn slowly to death or just spot for teammate to shoot them and they don't know that hitting them, U must back stapping by ambuse and suprise attack from the blind spot or worst player just thown steal toprs from a distance. U must be a really sick one to play good with this type

How to fight and deal damage? Right.

Disclaimer : I'm not a DD main player, let alone an expert. My saying below is based on sub-200 battle on my Maass and Z-23, and a friend of mine.

1. Choose your fight. As destroyer, you have clear advantages in stealth and speed. Use that to dictate your engagement, wether to close in to better position or ran. My target in this case is lonely BBs that are chasing teammates, then low-health destroyer, then cruisers. Never go toe-to-toe against full health cruiser. Ever. Use island the best you can.

2. Torpedoes is primary damage dealer for most destroyers, and tool for area denial. I tend to use them against incoming ships so that they have to dodge and thus present broadsides to my team, or strategic chokepoints between two islands.

3. You have guns too! Remember to use them when situation allows it. I usually opened fire against low-health targets to steal or distract enemy. But please, don't use it too liberally.

4. Preserve as much health as possible. Don't go into unecessary fight early on, not worth it. Better have large pool for late game bullying. And longer game equals higher damage.

5. Kite, Smoke, Cover. I slowly learning the basics, and contribute much to number 4 and 3.

6. Maybe unpopular, but i rarely cares about damage numbers. Yeah, i know, but personally i prefer to spot and be useful rather than farms cough Baguette & Vodka DD cough

I suggest you play other ship types first, like BB and CA, as a way to familiarize yourself with that type and use the knowledge in DD. Or at the very least, understood basic things like Radar and Hydro range.

How to deal damage in dd?

It instinct and experience that you gain from playing and get good at this game, lot of it, you need it to predict where enemy will be so your torp will hit or to tell you when it safe to fire your gun. Don't use damage to indicate whatever you were good at dd or not it didn't tell how good you are as a dd player and as you getting better, the damage will come with it.
