Best line for shooting, not torpedoes

Hi all, 

 

I recently got into world of warships a week ago. It's so engaging and fun, timing your shots. 

 

Can I know which line/nation is the "best" for cruiser? I'm more keen in using the cannons/guns to fire, as opposed to using torpedoes. 

 

As a side note, battleships are like quite slow and hard to maneuver. Does it get better in higher tiers? I like the guns only focus of battleships, but they're so slow (which is why I'm now looking for guns focused cruisers).

Soviet. Their shells travel swiftly, and at later tier can reach far distance. They have torpedoes, but short-ranged (not usable in most situations).

You forgot to mention the bias. I was in my Kremlin yesterday and oh, the blatant bias.

French Tech Tree have the best Gun and Run with useable 9km Torpedo. The Gun itself is one of the longest and have access to reload booster.

French Cruiser is the best tech tree to farm damage with least Risk by go speed boost and Loong range artilery. 

 

Other line

Japanese Cruiser have the most massive damage BUT PRONE to sink. Short ranged, and Ninja only player, its torpedo is also very Loong but very high Risk because showing stern....

Russia and Murica Cruiser have radar.... But also targeted by everyone and easily get Citadeled.

German Cruiser have highest HE pen so it can be consistent, but be wary againts battleship because turtleback armor cause full pen hit instead of overpen. 

Never try Italy so cannt giving advice

you are very new at the game so I've give some "dumbed down" advice (no offence)

new players are suggested to go play BB lines, they give you a better feel for the pace of the game and they survive much longer, especially In new hands, russian/japanese lines recommended 

if you insist on playing CAs, you have 3 good options

the Russian cruiser line is pretty decent all around, they have thin armor up toll T10 but high DPM guns and flat arcs, so sniping in encouraged. normally I wouldn't suggest this as a 1st line because of how fragile most of them are but there is a tech tree line split coming up soon for this line and players who already have the line are compensated, and every little bit counts when you are new

The french CA line is decent, T3-5 have so little armor that BB shells overpenn on them and it has excellent DPM, as well as the best consumable in the game, there are no "bad" ships in the line until you get to T10 and it's also a very good DPM cruiser training line

The USN CA line is REALLY good in the hands of a good player, new players will suffer a bit but it's surefire the best way to force someone to "git gud" fast in the game, the T6-8 ships are some of the best support/damage dealers in their class as long as player knows where to position them and they have almost the same threat level as a BB to other CAs when in <10KM range

If u want to play like marine in starcraf: France ( they like junkie)

if you want high set fire: JP

if you want tank: Ger

Don't mess with Eng, they suck

Many people here have good advice. I hope you use the forum to ask people more as you progress. It can be frustrating at times, even for veterans,  but it can also be such a fun game.

My advice is simple - try them all.

What works for other people may not gel with you. German cruisers are meant to be no good by comparison but I feel comfortable in them. No I'm not necassarily recomending them, I'm just saying.

This is, in my opinion, one of the truly free to play games out there. Of course you can spend money and many of us do but you do not need too.

Do not be lured into an early premium ship purchase. I know, I know... it's hard. As others have said, Wargaming trades on the FOMO (fear of missing out) principle - do not be lured into buying a ship early. Ask people on the forum for advice if you must.

Purchase premium time only for now if you must spend money.

If you suggest I go BB instead as a starter to familiarise myself with the game, the US ones are solid, based on what I've googled, right?

the IJN line is the most "traditional" BB line, decent armor all around and hard hitting guns for all tiers

USN BBs are pretty good at T7/8/10 but get outperformed by IJN BBs in all other lines

British BBs have gimmick HE and are decently strong, apart from the T8/9s, but isn't really indicative of how BBs play since they have pretty paper armor for a BB

soviet BBs are good at brawling but you need map knowledge to get into effective range

I wouldn't suggest playing the german/french lines since they are both pretty meh at this point

 

overall i'd recommend IJN BBs as a trainer line, or RN if you dislike how IJN BBs play

I’d suggest IJN or Russian, as others have.

US BBs are good, but they are also very slow until about T8.

IJN have weaker armour, but better speed, and good long range guns.

this is warning from someone that make huge mistake in 2017

if you feel frustated, playing BB or Ca sux..... you want to quit the game.... as the last resort PLAY CV

They still have speed in their sleeve. And range.

One of the most overlooked part of RN BB is their short pp range (Lion & Conqueror are the exceptions).

Which nation? I suggest all of them. The more you know the better.

Indeed. Using the T8 as the sample; the French may still be able to shoot things at 15 km mark, but the Brits would miss more than they hit. I mean while it is possible to devstrike a cruiser at range with Richelieu, Monarch would fail most of the time.

Is there a way to consolidate the silver stars thingy that we use for upgrades/new ships? I've noticed that the silver stars are tied to each ship, while the free exp (the gold stars in the top right corner) is shared for all ships, right?

I think cruisers are the way to go for me, personally. Battleships are just too slow for me, even though they hit like a truck. 

 

Gun focused cruisers are a lot of fun. Only "bad" thing is that their damage against battleships are lacking, even with AP rounds (or maybe its because I'm only in tier 4?).

Silverstar? did you mean XP ship? yes it ties on each ship. YOU CAN CONVERT THEM, once all module is researched.... the problem is, Convert ship xp REQUIRE EXPENSIVE Doubloon.... even more expensive than premium ship itself.

 

there is special ship for example :

1. Alaska, Azuma, Yoshino : Cruiser with battleship gun

2. Georgia, Bougogne : in game fastest battleship with 38knot... DD are joke... too bad they still turning wide

sadly too obtain them you need to farm coal or Free XP.... DONT WASTE FREE XP, little by little they become mountain.

coal is easily obtainable through open daily crate. if you play everyday, obtaining georgia in 4-5 month is possible.

 

if you look for FAST battleship, look at French BB.... they have speed boost and massive AA. the best tech tree BB for consistent speed. USN BB line is snail until you reach Iowa with 33knot

You can only convert them to free exp by using doubloons. Not recommended though as it is just a waste of money.

There is also

CA: Heavy Cruiser (gun caliber 200mm or larger)

CL: Light Cruiser (gun caliber 150 to 155mm)

But they are still all classified as cruisers as far as the matchmaker is concerned, and many people use CA to define all cruisers, light or heavy.

And I have no idea what cruisers such as Atlanta(127mm), Flint(127mm) and Smolensk(130mm) are classified as.
