Nah, it just means that the enemy CV was bad, because everybody knows that any decent CV player will absolutely trash any DD regardless of skill level right? Right?

dealing with CVs dosnt always means shooting down planes, it also includes using consumables, your teammates and your concealment

their CV couldn't do anything against me despite me having torpedo'd the living crap out of their teammates him having a good idea of where i was because of my rotation of smoke-- hiding with concealment/near friendly AA (when i know a rocket squad is comeing)-- slunking out of a "safe zone" to go be useful

no need to tell me that, I also know my way around CV. I dont even shoot down a single aircraft earlier - haku only send 3 strikes against me, so much leeway

either way most CV were non commited to hunt DD anyway prefer going farm dmg instead.

But sometimes or those CV in Division - realy tried to go after your arse half the game. one game in Kitakaze I shoot down 35+ aircraft from shoukaku  (thats like targeting a Higher tier AA boat, what a commitment) - so, I dont belive that CV realy that into you. If he is, even if you not die, you at least wont have such free game

And that's probably the only good thing about the damage-based rewards. Combined with the pricey service cost for the T8 & T10 CVs which makes them more tolerant to "the less rewarding targets".

The only exceptions are those who have personal vendetta toward DDs.
