I remembered a Yuro video where a shell hit the superstructure of a BB and that hit was a citadel.

There is a very heavily protected part of a warship called "Conning tower" (DDs have that too but irrelevant in this game). Some BBs can have 400+ mm there, about the same as or more than turret face thickness (which is one of the most protected parts of a BB).

I guess that counts as a vital part of the ship as well?

That's where the captains & admirals are during battles, to protect them..... Usually its right under the bridge of ships, with thin slits for them to see through... I think some cruisers have them too

You could say it's a battle bridge....

it's simple, your shell just drop into smoke stack, bounce and fall down to citadel room and BOOM.

that's all.

very simple ... really.

This is what is termed as 'HMS Hood event'. Catastrophic failure due to divine guided shell.

A Minotaur shell has 91mm of pen at 14km and will impact at a fall angle of 33°.  If it bounces off a piece of superstructure and ends up going down towards the deck, it has enough pen to enter the citadel. It's unlikely, but most definitely possible, and when you hit with enough shells this can happen.

Long ago when I was at Fiji, I scored a citadel on a bow on Colorado that was charging me down. Range was about 12 - 13 km.

Was aiming for turrets so shells would drift and hit superstructure. So imagine my surprise when I get a citadel ribbon...… :Smile_amazed:

It is a game, there are always going to be things that happen that in all actuality probably shouldn't

Could be a bug. I was using the IRIAN and with HE i hit the CV for Citadels... which was baffling since its fire damage lol.

This is historically correct though,  shell made more damage when it travel longatively across the ship body, this was one of the main advantage of the crossing the T tactics, apart from more guns shooting at the same target

It’s not unusual to score HE citadels on CVs or other lightly armored ships.

There' s times when ive seen Torpedoes go through islands (It seems to be a certain map at lower tiers) and shot at ships 5km out and the shells went straight through them like Ghosts, there was no clipping. But yes it is possible to Citadel CVs with wooden decks if your plunging shots from distance with IFHE. But when you dont have it on your captain and still doing it seems odd.
