Seems like an odd questions, but i want you to look at this pic.Hasil gambar untuk u boat crews with plaid shirts

I love plaid shirt but why do U-Boot crews like to wear them?

What is your opinion?

Maybe those shirts were from one manufacturer. The manufacturer will use what ever fabrics they can get their hands on. Pretty sure there's less fabric producer at that time because manpower is focused on tanks/ammunition manufacturing.

Probably was worn as a necessity for warmth or comfort as well as practicality instead of wearing a uniform and getting funky from weeks of no showers.

There are also some historical references to the smaller checks being synonymous with the engineers.  Other barnachs of the German armed forces also wore checked shirts under their uniform.

According to sites that live for this trivial information I found this

Quote

Schlicht/Angolia, Kriegsmarine
Rough translation form German:
"16.09.1941 the wear of colored and or plaited shirts is permitted, but with a white collar for officers and senior NCO's....."
than later in the war
"with regulation 14.06.1944 colored shirts could be distributed to senior NCO's instead of white shirts.."
Distributed means officially in my opinion."

Also, it could have been the height of fashion. Trendy.

As the song says, 'Every girl's crazy 'bout a sharp dressed man'.

RAN or Kriegsmarine? @AntifoulAwl

 Not sure.

He appears to be high-ranking member of the Cenrelink Army.
