WG gave me a coupon (I'm guessing others got one too).

I have 2 days to spend it.

Thanks WG, also, YOU BASTARDS!

Ahem. Well all that aside, I have a list of probables. Making an informed choice on buying premiums has been fruitful in the past so once more I seek the...

...Wisdom of The Forum.

First Choices

Atlanta - I have many US ships and thus many US captains. Every time I see an Atlanta I wish I had one to try. Makes the most sense all over. Universal trainer? If I had 1 second to decide, it would be Atlanta. Unless many people say "HELL NO!" I will probably choose Atlanta.

Haida - Commonwealth bias, even if not strictly speaking, Australian bias 😛 (Hi Canada!) I've been enjoying Perth and would like to add another 50%er trainer per day. Also think I would enjoy this ship. I have Perth and Vampire. If my wallet cries too hard when I go to buy an Atlanta, I will happily choose Haida.

Kidd - Patriot Alex with +400 health per tier in a T8 DD with a heal? Sounds intriguing. Again, I have many US ships and have trained Patriot Alex to Gearing but need to get him more XP. This could be a hella fun way to do it. T8 Premium to do campaigns in.

Second Choices

Monaghan - only if the Gunbote version is better than Farragut - which I'm not sure it is. Still - premium US Gunbote DD. Fits in to my fleet.

Z-39 - I have T-61, would I be doubling up? T7 can be a fun tier and I have an 18 point German DD captain already.

Third Choices

Molotov - Big guns.

Anshan - Free XP.

Marbelhead - Just because.

Murmansk - Just because.

I considered and discarded Boise as I compiled this list.

Thanks for any lived experience advice.

Don't even worry about 2nd or third choices unless  you need RU or KM trainers.

If you can position well and know where to hide a Lolanta then get it.   it rewards good positioning and punishes bad plays.  If not then I would get the Kidd

Yup, Atlanta. The captain you use in the US CL grind will comfortably sit in her, too.

Haida would be my second choice.

On a side note, this forum would be dead without you, Max. Get a hobby ffs!

My hobbies include changing to AP as the enemy turns away from my HE barrage and asking people what ships to buy 😛

My first choices would be the Lolanta, I use her for grinding captain experience, and she never failed me on this role. Bought her at 50% discount, It's served well for US Navy DD, CL, CA captain "training ship". Since then I got 3 captains for USN, each with 10 pts, and sit well on captain reserve, waiting for new boats to command.

Second choice, Kidd. Just because curiousity. And I'm fan of the Fletchers (little bit bias here).

I have made some poor choices on premium ships... Indianapolis, Arizona to name a couple... ships that may very well be fit for a certain purpose, but as it turned out, were not fit for any of MY purposes...

So now I gather opinions and experiences before choosing to spend RL money.

Let's see what Wisdom the Forum offers us!

Late entry, wild outsider.

If I bought the daily shipments doubloons I would get 6300 doubloons which if combined with what I already have, would leave me 2k shy of Prinz Eugen.

2k doubloons = 4x Weekend Pass that I get all the time.

Which means in 2 weeks I could get a Prinz Eugen at quite a large discount. (The 30% discount for coupon plus the discount you get in daily shipment doubloons).

Yeah. You're right. That does sound kinda terrible compared to a Kidd, Haida or Atlanta right now...

Unless Prinz Eugen is an absolute brilliant ship that bypasses the T8 MM woe at the moment?

K.

Well, it comes down to the three top choices.

Atlanta, Haida and Kidd.

I have done some more careful reading of each ship's reviews on wiki plus LWM and some Valkyr dude on NA since I posted this thread.

They are all niche ships.

I am vacillating though I think Haida is in front and is my cheapest option - which as I also need to eat, is a thing.

Atlanta: $37 outright purchase with coupon.

Kidd: $26 for doubloons to make up difference with what I have.

Haida: $23 outright purchase with coupon.

My suggestion would be to aim for the Tier 8 ships, as they very rarely get a 30% discount. Though the Atlanta is also a great choice, plus she is awesome in the Tier 7 Operations.

Personally I am eyeing the Kidd, as I do need a high tier USN DD captain trainer, and I love gunboat DDs. Will probably use my coupon to get her, if I don't use it on Jean Bart instead.

About Prinz Eugen, I don't know. I don't own her, but she is basically a Hipper that trades RoF for a heal. And I was pretty unimpressed with the Hipper back when I grinded her before she got the RoF buff.

Hmm. Yes. There is an argument for grabbing a T8 ship at reduced price. I have many fun T7 ships for Ops already.

A US ship makes the most sense for me, considering my fleet composition. LWM thinks Kidd won't actually do much damage though?

On a side note, I already have this beauty in the picture already - so I already have a fast firing T7 HE machine - just not a premium, even though she has the free premium camo from a couple of months back.

I would be mistaken at thinking Atlanta would be the same as Helena I guess...

Indianapolis isn't too bad, The AP is really really good. Pity about the squishy Armour and poor reload time.I have citadelled and NC in it and also got a 6 cit salvo on a mogami xD. It seems to make decent credits too..

They play much the same but the Helena has much more comfortable range.

Oh I have made a post on this very forum professing my love for 203mm American Piercing shells. I have also citadelled a NC with them (can't remember if Pensacola or Indi). They feel great. Reload time is terrible though as you say.

There are three ways that I have enjoyed the Indi - all highly situational:

1. Pure AA. I have done this a fair bit. I load up on full AA modules and consumables and hang with the Battleships. Indi's range means you can usually engage what they engage but from behind them while you keep them safe from air attack.

2. Sensors for BB. Same as AA but load up on radar and hydro. Let enemy DDs come close thinking they are the hunter and then BAM I can see you! Again, stay with Battleships and keep them safe.

3. Sensors for DD. Push with DDs, use their smoke or island cover and use radar and hydro to spot with/for them.

All these things are supporting actions and rely on others to do their job - something that I think LWM made clear in her review that I read before I bought Indi. So yeah, in support of people who know what they are doing - great. But by herself? not so hot. I'd rather random with New Orleans - she feels like a better all rounder.

Atlanta isn't a universal trainer. Not even close. She needs a very specific captain skillset to make the games enjoyable. You need all three of CE, AFT, IFHE. Now do you have that captain? Without CE, you will be sptted first by DDs and leaves a long gap between your radar range and detection range. While it is sill possible to play, but gonna be hard. Even gunboat DDs can finish Atlanta staying 10 km+ Cause you will not hit them.

Without AFT, I doubt you can get anyone in range to shoot at. Especially in SEA.

Without IFHE, yah those 127mms arent going to deal any damage.

You do have unlimited DFAA though, which is further augmented by having AFT as I said earlier as a required skill.

Kidd is pretty easy DD to play, and you can go ham on other DDs knowing that you can heal up. But, do not forget, you can only heal up if you can live long enough 😉 And you are still a DD. Negative sides: Low torpedo potential, positive side, super strong AA when used with AA spec commander.

Among the three choices in your first group, Id say go for Kidd.

From 2nd group, Monaghan. You have freedom to utilize two types of gameplay from one ship as you decide for the match. Personally I found myself not having too guns is way too much of a downside. Basically plays like a slightly better Farragut.

From 3rd, Anshan would be the obvious choice.

LWM is right. With only 1 set of torpedo launchers, the Kidd isn't meant to go after the big ships. First and foremost she is meant to be a DD hunter and cap contester. The torps are situational.

They play quite similar, though with some differences. Atlanta has a lot faster RoF, Radar, infinite DFAA charges to make CVs cry etc, among other differences.
