Pros:

  • Generous health pool.
  • Fast firing main battery with good range.
  • Solid maneuverability: good max speed and radius, decent rudder shift.
  • Best-in-tier concealment with a base detection radius of 6.3 km.
  • Has special "moving" smoke like Perth and separate consumable slot for Hydroacoustic Search (While active, detects all enemy ships and torpedoes within the specified radius, regardless of obstacles (such as smoke screens or islands).).

Cons:

  • Small main battery caliber means that Inertia Fuse for HE Shells is a virtual must in order to deal significant damage.
  • Low shell velocity makes it difficult to hit other enemy destroyers at range.
  • Small torpedo arsenal: only four torpedo tubes.
  • Poor anti-aircraft armament (like most other destroyers).

I love Haida but due to it's ballsy style of gameplay it can be brutal in a bad and good way. A lot of this is down to how many radars are in battle as you start seeing a few at T7.

Plus side is Perth captain works pretty well once you have IFHE, I still have 2 points to go and then I'll be training a Vampire/Haida captain.

I used to primarily play dds once upon a time, just not very fun class anymore. Watch one or two gameplay videos and decide for yourself if you love the style. You have to be quite aggressive DD player, at the same time you need to know the difference between being aggressive and being overextended.

This is as far as my Commonwealth captains have gone so far - ie, not very!

I have started some PvP with Perth even though I thought I might grind out at least another prime pick like CE before I did. (Rewards in PvP just so much better than Coop so even if fail game or fail team, the reward/time equation is still better).

But even without CE, she still has 9.8km conceal. She is really nimble too. I'm finding that combo pretty usable and have even used conceal, smoke and ambush to point blank torp a BB or two! This aggressive style of play isn't something I had anticipated but is something that has worked, albeit with a small number of battles so far against human opponents.

I actually managed to sneak up on a Gnesienuaesiauiesiau that was in our cap and I had launched the killer blow torps on it when the game ended! (Time ran out, we won on points). So, sure, a Fiji had his attention ("that's fkn Teamwork!") but that aggressive style paid off and surprised me.

Yes I might have got lucky but with "only" a ten point captain, she feels good to me. Radar not as much of a problem for T6 Perth I guess as well.

Just made me wonder if Haida would make a good addition to my Commonwealth fleet.

Haida and Perth play completely differently.

Haida is not an easy ship to play.  It's designed to operate at ranges that are suicidal for any other ship.  If you make a mistake, you're going to die very quickly.  It's extremely strong in the hands of an experienced and competent DD captain, but for anyone else I would recommend other ships.  Jervis and GM are similar ships at the same tier that are much easier to play.

I find it interesting that you think the Jervis is easier...

I like the Jervis, I like playing the Haida more and I find Haida a bit more forgiving with creeping smokes...

Jervis operates much further away than Haida due to it's poor concealment.  It also has smokes on demand, and amazing acceleration to get it out of trouble.  Haida often operates 3-4km from enemy DD's, which means you are very close to enemy cruisers and BB's, and that means if you stuff up your smoke, your positioning, or you fail to account for radars properly, you're going to die very rapidly.

So consequences of mistakes are much higher in Haida, and less experienced or skilled DD captains will of course make more mistakes, hence these players may struggle with Haida more than other DD's.
