The World's Last Battleship: HMS Vanguard (23)

The KGV-class battleships were the best ships the RN got. But after the destruction of HMS Hood, and the sinking of Prince of Wales, and Pearl Harbor, they realized that they needed a better battleship. The Lion-class Battleship, were modified KGVs, elongated and fitted with 9x16 inch guns, just like the North Carolina & South Dakota class of the USN, and an improved version of the 16 inch guns of the Nelson & Rodney.. But they were scrapped, realizing that the new 16 inch guns were still in development, plus the resources were scarce to scrape together for the British.

So they made a parallel project, using the 8x15inch guns on the Courageous-class and learning from the lessons learned to make a true successor to the KGV-class. The result, was HMS Vanguard. Underwater protection was top notch, design against hit from 1000kg Torpedos.

Unfortunately, she was too late to see action in WWII, being commissioned in 1946, due to the constant delays and overruns in development and design of the ship. She was then used for the Royal Trip to South Africa and Queen Elizabeth II's Coronation Review in 1952.

So, when the Royal Navy comes in the future patches, HMS Vanguard would most likely be Tier X BB or Tier IX BB of the RN, and if it were to be tier IX, then most likey, the Lion-class Battleships would be the Tier X BBs

I thought they wanted to put the quad "X" turret on the Vanguard like the KGV.

they gonna need to have a ship which can match Yamato and Montana

We can't have her for that

Her armor is just... Not Suitable to eat any 18"shells and her firepower is not as good as Current tier 8 Battleship But she indeed compensate it with thicker armor, same tier as Bismarck (probably)

Recommend For tier X ship are

  • HMS Incomparable
  • N3 Class Battleship

I think it has often been overstated just how powerful IJN Yamato's guns were. Despite the 18.1inch caliber, they in fact equal to the 16inch guns on the Iowa Class. So the one to beat is actually the US 16inch guns when the US battleships get added. The 2,700ib super-heavy shells fired by US battleships were hard to beat.

The guns of HMS Vanguard were supplied with superchargers and modified for higher elevation, making for more powerful and longer ranged firepower. But yes, at most tier IX. Lion-class would most likely be IX or X.

An Excellent Warship - except the gun (British Guns had never been as good as the others, even with the Vanguard's Modification). It's essentially a 1910s gun slightly upgraded.

You also forgot to mention that it's handling is fantastic due to the ship shape (It's square at the end of the ship, making it handle much better just like how the modern ship are built today). Also, another main feature is that every kind of gun had it's own Fire Control Radar - AA (40mm, 20mm and the 114mm Dual Purpose - Seperately), Secondary, Main Battery, giving an glorious end to the British Naval Glory  and a Dark ages till now.

I love that the ship has a similar Superstructure as the Warspite but with the smoke stacks in the vein of USN Battleships,

That square stern is very interesting to hear about, especially a ship that size

The 15in guns and turrets are from store....coming from HMS Courageous and HMS Glorious (after they were converted to carriers).

Edit: guess they used them to speed the building of her

- Which is ashame. Other than the guns she is a Fantastic Warship. Unfortunately British 15 inch gun had never been as good a Italy's/German's.

- But failed. All the workers to rushed to built DDs and CVs.

You might want to do a little research on 15in guns as the British 15in gun is consider to be the best (only real problem being the mounts which never got an elevation above 30 degrees limiting range).

The Italian 15in had a higher mussel velocity then the British gun which giving reduced barrel life and wider dispersion.

"The German 15in on the other hand only fired a very light shell compared to the British and Italian guns".......That was what I was going to say but my books are up to 30yrs old and after doing some research found that a lot of what I had read on the German 15in gun was based on the WWI gun which is very different to the 38cm/52 SK C/34 used by Bismarck. The older German gun 38cm/45 SK L/45 used on the battleship Bayern did fire a 15in round of only 1650lb (British 15in fired 1920lb round). But the new gun design fired a round of 1760lb which is closer to the weight of the British gun the gun German gun had longer range (36km compared to 26.5km).

So I guess I learnt something new today. old books have old information. :sceptic:

I do know about the Italian thing - but nothing changed that British are using a 30 year old Gun on a 1945 Battleship.

Using 879KG AP shell it can penetrate 228.9mm of armor, which is not bad - Funny even better than the Nelson's 16 inch guns. But with all the Modification (Like the one you mentioned increased the Elevation angle to 30 Degrees, extending the range up to ~29350m), it's just too old to be fitted on a "Modern" Battleship for the time. There's only 8 of them as well. US, meanwhile Yankees are using Triple Gun Turret Long Long time ago.

Still, a Great ship despite it's flaws.
