Info:

Armoured cruiser Azuma was ordered on 1896 and built in Ateliers et Chantiers de la Loire, Saint Nazaire, France as part of the 'Second Naval Expansion Programme' where six battleships and six cruisers were built to strengthen the Imperial Japanese Navy, Azuma being one of them. Many of the Japanese ships were ordered in UK but for Azuma, she's ordered in France next to her sister ship, Yakumo, ordered in Germany. Launched on 24th June 1899 and entered service on 28th July 1900 with Captain Ogura Byōichirō appointed as CO.

Azuma participated in the Battle of Port Arthur on 9th Feb 1904 as part of the 2nd Fleet where she pursue a Russian cruiser squadron but unsuccessful. She later caught them during the Battle of Ulsan on 14th Aug 1904 where where assisted in the sinking of Russian cruiser Rurik and damaging Rossia and Gromoboi. Azuma also played a major role on relaying messages of position of the Russian fleet from the reconnaissance ships before the Battle of Tsushima. During the battle itself tho, Azuma suffered a moderate damage from damaged steering gear, dead crew and senior officers, destroyed stern battery, all from 15 hits. She's forced to retreat from the battle to repair.

Azuma's role in WWI were insignificant as she's used as a training vessel despite fitted and combat ready. She escorted Japanese cruiser Iwate to Australia, 1916 and United States, 1918 as training and goodwill visits. She took no part in any combat operation throughout the war.

Azuma continued her training days even after World War I. On 1st September 1921, she's re-designated as 1st class Coastal Defense Vessel and remained as a stationary hulk with her armaments stripped off for training. Azuma was officially removed from the navy list on 15 Feb 1944. On 15th July 1945, an aircraft from the TF-38 bombed the hulk of Azuma, sinking it in the shallow waters. The wreckage was raised and scrapped after the war. The anchor of Armoured cruiser Azuma was preserved and displayed at Nogi Jinja in Tokyo, Japan.

Fate:

Sunk (Scrapped)

15 July 1945

After reading back, I can already sense that there are tons of mistakes that I might not noticed. So dear historians and warships experts, do tell if there's any inaccuracy or something to add or point out. Don't want to spread the wrong info in the historical section now, would we?

edit the picture to remove the Rising Sun flag, sorry, but it is not allowed on the forums

Really Lengxv6? That is a historical picture of an actual IJN Cruiser, in full detail how it was back in WWI / WWII. Why is the Rising Sun flag not allowed on the forums? I'm confused. It's a part of history, something which molded and shaped our world. A part of history which can be found on Wikipedia, in documentaries, etc and so on. Really, can you explain why it is that particular flag can not be shown on the forums? I must have missed the memo or something for the reason behind it...It's almost like saying "Remove all confederate flags from any pictures relating to the Civil War." It happened, many southerners in the US are quite proud of their heritage and that flag is part of it. It's being able to touch something which is a part of history, a part of who we were and where we came from. Almost like saying "Never show the Eureka flag", or telling a country not to show its colors.

Also, considering I've spent some time on the Wiki, placing photo's of historic ships in the gallery there, namely IJN Destroyers, will I then have to go back through every single picture and ensure each one doesn't have a Rising Sun flag on it?

ON Topic, very nice write up Subete_Yoi. I'm always interested in historical ships. Thank you for bringing this one to my attention. Can you tell me what class she was? :)

Done. Not sure why it's necessary to do that in the historical section but hey, don't want the red crayon...

Give him a break, he's an intern moderator. Gotta follow the rules ye know? :sceptic:

Anyways, Azuma was pretty unique. She doesn't seems to be in any class... yet, she has Yakumo as her 'near' Sister Ship as both of them are built in foreign countries (France and Germany) rather than in the UK as per the Six Six Program where the IJN constructs 6 battleships and 6 cruisers.

Among the 6 cruisers, there's the Asama & Tokiwa (Asama Class), there's the Izumo & Iwate (Izumo Class), then we have the Yakumo and Azuma (not really in the same class...) So yea, unique ship by her own. Built differently from the rest.

I know he's an intern, and I really didn't mean it to sound so...however I sounded. I really am interested in knowing the reasons behind the removal of the Rising Sun flag.

Really? Now that is interesting. So, they had 2 of the Asama class, 2 of the Izumo Class, and the last two were in a...class of their own? Will you be putting up the specifications / history of the others you've mentioned, along with the 6 battleships which were built in the Six Six Program? I ask, because, effectively, to only have 1 or 2 in a class is, for the most part, unique. Or, failing placing them here, perhaps links? lol. I really am sad when it comes to reading about these things, I love them. Ships that is. A dream of mine was to actually have a live on ship. I wanted a battleship, but would have been satisfied with a destroyer :D Yeah, I was a kid at one point lol.

The Rising Sun Flag while still in use today, is not allowed to be posted on the World Of Warships Forums.

Some Countries have Expressed Issues with the flag and Wargaming Has Decided to avoid the Issue by removing the Flag from the Game.

You are Welcome to Build or Use a Modification with this flag on your own Client, however Images of the flag are Not allowed as per above.

Topic Locked.

~Madiba

basicly it has been removed to stop controversy, problem is, removing it has also started some controversy. The bottom line is, you are not allowed to display the Rising Sun on the forums.

Just not allowed on the forums because a few (I really mean a few here) angry koreans complained to wargaming following the rising sun's presence on the e3 video from some years back. You can use modifications of your client to display the rising sun flag, just pictures or youtube videos are not allowed to be linked or embedded on the forums. You can still post them or upload them to respective sites, just nothing can be referenced here.

As for what leng has said yes removing it has caused not just a little controversy but ALOT of controversy, primarily the entire JP forum section is extremely mad at wargaming's stance but theres nothing we can do about it. Maybe if a fan forum pops up (which is inevitable - if not already) it can be shared freely there.

I'm angry at wargaming's stance as well, they basically are agreeing to historical censorship, which is why I strive to find mods that will fix these blatent (and outright stupid) forms of censorship. I still abide to forum rules, but I'll continue using the rising sun flag in my game, and will probably texture the Tirpitz or Bismarck to have the giant nazi insignia on the bow, since it was there... but will most likely be removed in WoWs.

I'll place them up soon. Need to gather materials and info for a good thread.

Can't be helped. I'm sitting on a fence here, swinging side to side occasionally.
