These things on the turrets

Just want to know what are those squares on the turrets. Curiously this seems exclusive to American cruisers and are not present on IJN ones or even the American BB turrets.

They're kiddy pools. Splash a bit of water in it, kick back with a few beers and a few mates, and you've got yourself a good old seaman party. Essential equipment on any long cruise.

Does anyone remember certain questionably made naval games where liferafts could bounce shells for whatever reason

Certainly Komrade! It is well known historical fact that Khabarovsk's stronk armour is actually being made out of special life rafts. Superior Russian survival technology makes light fast ship, able to bounce any shell and still be fast enough ship to out run inferior decadent Western torpedo.

It is in game made by mighty Russian  studio renown for extensive  research.

Back in those days, women weren't allowed aboard such fighting vessels and thus there was no practical way to ferry each freshly poured round of drinks to the seaman revelers. So having the beer kegs inside the party area was of critical importance.

In recent years the Navy has remedied this problem by allowing women into the service.
