How to effectively train captains with premium ships?

The favorable XP/credit multipliers on Premium ships coupled with the ability to assign a captain trained in another ship to the Premium ship without penalty means an often quoted use of Premiums is for leveling up captains on.

The problem is I don't see any obvious scenario for the Atago as a training ship.

For example, my Atago. I have a bunch of 10+ point IJN cruiser captains. I also have the captain the Atago came with, currently sitting at 2 points.

Usually my Aoba captain is assigned to the Atago. I don't do this to improve the Aoba captain so much as I need someone to do the job and the Atago captain with 2 points is such a liability in Randoms I feel bad for my team to take the ship out with less than a 10 pointer.

I could use my Mogami captain, but he's the IFHE specialist. The Myoko captain I guess, but he's just a carbon copy of the Aoba anyway...

This has been bothering me for a while, hopefully someone can explain it to me.

If, for instance, you wanted to start playing your Kuma again but had moved the commander on and had to start over with a fresh one, it would be quite a chore to get him up to, say, 6pts just using the Kuma. However, the 37,000xp required could be done in a single battle with a high tier premium (like the Atago) with all the best camo/signals and a good performance. Of course, a 0pt commander puts you at a bit of a disadvantage in this scenario, so you really want to work towards a 19pt commander which will generate free cmdr xp which could be used to upgrade your Kuma guy - or any other commander from any other nation as well.

Getting a 19pt commander for use on a high tier premium is quite liberating and highly recommended.

Hmm. That makes sense.

Maybe there's a middle ground say I wanted to train Mr. Kuma captain and took him to 6 points in the Kuma then went 6 -> 10 in Atago. Though ... yeah, I think I'm done with Kuma. Cute ship, but I know I'm married to Furutaka now (400k ship xp and counting...).

Atago is a great commander trainer for any IJN cruiser captain. You train a captain with premium ships by putting a captain on the premium ship and playing the game. You don't need to over analyse.

Myoko and Atago are very similar ships. Training a Myoko captain on Atago is a very good idea. Same goes for Aoba or Furutaka. You should also train the Mogami captain, but yes IFHE on Atago's 203mm guns is a redundant skill.

The point is you are getting an extra ship to get daily bonus as well as extra xp and credit earning to train a tech tree captain without retraining for that ship. The captain you are training does not have to have skills that are a perfect and exact fit for the premium ship anyway.

Example. I have a German captain trained on Gneisenau. He was my Tirpitz captain that came with the ship and I trained him up from 10 points. I have him trained for Gneis but I earn extra training by using him on premium ships Tirpitz, Prinz Eugen, Scharnhorst and Graf Spee. His skill set with manual secondary is better for German BB but is ok for cruiser too. He is now a 19 point commander and all his commander EXP goes into elite experience I can use to level up or redistribute points on other commanders. I now have a 19 point Jack Dunkirk, a 19 point US BB captain as well as my Yamato captain getting to 19 points. This was all done by rotating the commanders among same nations premium ships to accelerate training. Once you get one or more 19 point commanders things become much easier.

True enough, still - a lot of WoWS is min/maxing let's face it. If I train Mogami on Atago, for example, it means I am not playing Mogami and therefore not grinding to Ibuki. If on the other had I just really like playing Atago anyways, then it makes sense to slot in my Myoko/Aoba/Furutaka captains and milk the XP.

I hadn't thought about using it to "double dip" the daily win bonus. That's a useful trick. But overall I get the sense from your examples that it's mainly relevant when you have the ship line researched already and you are more interested in grinding captains than ships. That's the distinction I hadn't appreciated.

For me I was mostly using premium ships to get the daily bonus several times on a captain that was being trained up the line to T10. I would also grind out an extra commander point on a premium ship if I was close to being able to get something important like concealment expert for example.

I was using the premium ship rotation with a captain more when training a captain to go up the line so to speak. After a captain gets to 19 points I would still rotate that same captain around all relevant higher tier premium ships to get the most efficient amount of elite commander experience.
