If you research an upgrade that requires an upgraded hull -i.e. the Iowa's range module-, the stock hull will be gone from your inventory and you won't be able to sell it. You can only sell the stock hull before researching the upgrades that requires an upgraded hull. It's the same for any other ships that has upgrades that has an upgraded hull requirement.
