Been a while since I badposted here. I was conflicted between Roma (now I did badpost of the Littorio but never a certain ship) and Ramillies, so I decided to go for the latter because reasons.

I PRESENT TO YOU HMS RAMILLIES.

I don't mean THIS Ramillies because this thing died in a storm

nor I mean THIS pre-dread Ramillies.

THIS Ramillies (well its Revenge actually). GLORIOUS OLD DREAD

An amusing thing about the Revenges (no no, they're Royal Sovereigns, or are they?) are, while they were expected to be a slightly more hax version of the Queen Elizabeths by compacting the living shit out of the ship which were one of the finest dreads in the world, there were some strange bits that could have happened that made them still quite awesome in their tenure. While they didn't get the Admiralty love like the Queen Liz's, Hood and the two Renowns, they were still there as part of the battleship force the Brits had, Ramillies being one of them. And they didnt receive the intensive port love they badly needed. Oh and the Renowns were offshoots from them because the Admiralty's Sea Lord had a wet dream of a fast capital ship that cruisers will love to ride shotgun with and the Revenge's style can be redesigned to his wet dream battlecruiser concept.

As she was, she had about 13 inches of belt, nearly 4 inches of deck, about 13 inches of turret and 6 inches of bulkheads which should include the blisters installed because WW1 shenanigans of torpedoes being extremely dangerous (if you want to blame something, blame the Jeune École concept because big ass ships CAN be killed by smaller ships carrying stuff to kill such ships) and this is including the notion that those things were filled with a small amount of crushed rock and gravel in the empty space so that the ship won't be that harmed should a torpedo score home. She also presented herself with her arrays of offensive weaponry being the BL 15 inch Mk 1 guns in the same AB-XY layout as her predecessors, a buckload of 6 inch guns for her secondaries, some 76mm pop shooter AA guns with good ceilings, torpedo tubes that were removed because it was stupid later on, and later on should have a couple of .50 caliber AA guns, some pompoms and I have no idea if Bofors were chucked in for the AA hax. The ship could run at about 22 knots but because of reasons, she could reach top speed of 20-21, 19 if things went balls-to-the-wall.

Just because a battleship's old doesn't mean its out of the fight that quick

About Ramillies and her sisters... yeah...

A reason why they didnt receive inter-war retrofitting and hax installation of absurd proportions like the Queen Elizabeths (as per notion, Warspite in the 30's received her distinct big ass superstructure and Malaya had stuff like a big ass funnel) was of their construction. The battleships were basically a slightly sleeker and smaller Queen Liz and that made it really hard to install hax like better engines and the like without breaking down the entire ship from scratch because of this. As a contemporary, the American dread West Virginia had a total refit when she was still technically inter-war and this wasn't saying they had a structural refit that made em modern enough or even the Japanese Fuso which had a crapton of retrofits herself. tl;dr retrofitting the living shit out of a dread requires a crapton of things to happen and considerations to apply, the Revenges and by extension Ramillies couldn't sustain a whole refit and just had radar, GFCS and AA hax installed. This aint really helping much to the fleet when she was escorting because when they were present, the fleet had to match their speed. Sure she was still very dangerous because of her guns and armor, but running about was another thing they couldn't really do. Their colleagues Renown and Hood were fast, the Queen Liz's were fast (marginally for a dread) but the Revenges aint. This was a problem in the Med because the Italians were faster and it enabled them to get the hell out of dodge or move to a position where they can whack the shit out of the fleet. At least the lining here is that she would have been stable as hell as a firing platform as she wouldn't roll as much in her intentions of design and even though she was a modified Queen Liz design, she was nowhere near "bad" structurally.

However, this didn't stop her from serving and as my grandfather had said long ago in regards to old tools being deemed as "useless", "if a blade is old yet only needs sharpening, it is by no counts a useless tool". That was Ramillies in a nutshell in a naval era that the post-dreads dominated the scene. If put as a quote, "slow and steady" means something to her and her sisters.

its like putting a fire livery on an old Rolls Royce 1940's Phantom because you can

Apart from a relatively calm tenure, when WW2 broke out she was all over the place, from troop and stuff escort delivery to trying to whack the shit out of the German pirates like Graf Spee, which amusingly, had to run away when they realized that Ramillies and her colleagues were grinding an axe for her and had to scuttle after a whacking in River Plate from the cruiser group that found her led by Exeter. She had a run in the Med by pummeling the shit out of forts and really scary escort duties where she nearly got torpedoed and the Italian Air Force deciding to give her a big middle finger in a rousing game of hit the battleship with ordnance. She also met Vittorio Veneto and the retrofitted dread Giulio Cesare where she tried to reach effective firing position while still popping shots of her own to respond to their salvos because Italian range derp during that tradeoff at Cape Spartivento.

While babysitting convoys in the Atlantic, she found herself face to face with the Scharnhorst twins going full pirate and as the battleship was preparing to range and bare her guns, they suddenly ran away because Leutjens going all "HOLY SHIT IS THAT A BATTLESHIP?! RUN AWAAAAAYYYYYY!!!" because of standing orders that German capital ships must not whack the shit out of any enemy capital ships in risk of severe damage even though the captain of Scharnhorst offered to bait the old battleship while pummeling it with their superior range, just because Ramillies had big guns that hurt ships bad and they don't want to be hurt bad by such guns. It wasnt helping the more that after Hood mag detted in the most horribly spectacular way as possible, the Admiralty had a massive bitchfit about tirades on killing Bismarck and apart from the main hunter-killer force led by King George V, Ramillies was peeled off convoy escort (the reason why she was stuck babysitting convoys is again of the threat by the German raiders. Hell the twins RAN AWAY FROM HER which kinda solidifies the deal though they could have just as easily whacked her nilly willy) in order to attempt and find Bismarck which was thought to still be supported by Prinz Eugen after taking a meaty level of damage from the earlier incursion. As fate would have it, the main hunter-killer force caught up to the German battleship before she did. She then sailed to the East to help with bombardment and force deterrence but got torpedoed by a Japanese midget submarine which did severe damage on the battleship but somehow she just shrugged it off and returned to base for damage assessment and was found out that while the torpedo strike should have been enough to badly maim a big capital ship like her, she just kept calm and carried on despite the heavy damage after intensive damage control. She was also one of the many warships that dueled with the shore batteries in Normandy and afterwards silently retired and scrapped.

I gotta salute this old dread. Partial hax yet still got shit done even if she wasn't expected to be great.

if there was a thing to this battleship to say "gitgud" for, it would be the venerable service of Ramillies who had PARTIAL HAX installed in order to sort of keep her in line.

In-game wise I expect Ramillies to be a tier 5 premium because Warspite is currently sitting at the tier 6 though if slated as a tier 6 reward ship for another HONORABRU campaign, I wouldn't mind. She'd have decent AA and with the same ungodly dispersion Warspite has. The armor will be a bit lesser than Warspite although I can approximate her range being 16km flat much like the AZ. Also I expect her to have a decent HP and wont take torpedo strikes in full damage that easily.

Derp.exe -debug has now crashed.

Every time I see a WW1 config Q.E. class, I always see it as a baby Warspite.

Wouldn't mind seeing this in the game though

Amusingly, Warspite's sisters like Valiant didnt get the same modernization tier as she did like improved superstructure or whatnot, just the same GFCS improvements and AA directors.

I really think that the British didn't try hard to refit the whole Revenge class. Even the smaller US WWI dreadnoughts with 14" guns and 21kts only, they still got a complete modernization, such as removing the old 5" guns with dual-purpose 5" and increased the elevation of main turrets! The R class battleships didn't receive a modernized turret, didn't get their useless 6" guns removed and only added a small number of AA guns. Wt a unacceptable idea!!!:Smile_sad:

Thing is, the WW1 dreads had expected inevitable refits as part of their design inquiry. one reason why the US superdreads didnt have that much problems in massive retrofittings is due to the nature of the hull build: the Revenges aren't exactly that as they were an offshoot of the Queen Elizabeths and for the most part, it costs a crapton of money if they decide to put all the effort on that measly dread that may or may not have faster speeds that does NOT have the side effect of making the battleship's seakeeping bad. Note that this is already accepting the fact the battleship having more guns will cramp up the deck some more

Its really more on "give the ships a massive refit if they can take it" since Britain simply couldn't shell out the cash to intricately refit the Revenges. At least the Queen Elizabeths were big and they could be retrofitted without so much as very pressing problems.
