Premium Ship HMS JAMAICA - Colony-class Light Cruiser

I would love to see HMS JAMAICA  -  Colony-class Light Cruiser added to the British light cruisers as a Premium ship. She had a great service history and would well deserve a Premium status among British light cruisers.

With the option to mount a Jamaican/British Flag. Ya man! :)

HMS Jamaica, a Crown Colony-class cruiser of the Royal Navy, was named after the island of Jamaica, which was a British possession when she was built in the late 1930s. The light cruiser spent almost her entire wartime career on Arctic convoy duties, except for a deployment south for the landings in North Africa in November 1942. She participated in the Battle of the Barents Sea in 1942 and the Battle of North Cape in 1943. Jamaica escorted several aircraft carriers in 1944 as they flew off airstrikes that attacked the German battleship Tirpitz in northern Norway. Late in the year she had an extensive refit to prepare her for service with the British Pacific Fleet, but the war ended before she reached the Pacific.

Jamaica spent the late 1940s in the Far East and on the North America and West Indies Station. When the Korean War began in 1950 she was ordered, in cooperation with the United States Navy, to bombard North Korean troops as they advanced down the eastern coast. The ship also provided fire support during the Inchon Landing later that year. Jamaica was refitted late in the year and returned to Great Britain in early 1951 where she was placed in reserve.

She was recommissioned in 1954 for service with the Mediterranean Fleet. In 1955 Jamaica was used to play HMS Exeter in the film Battle of the River Plate, in company with her wartime partner HMS Sheffield as HMS Ajax. In 1956 the ship participated in Operation Musketeer, the Anglo-French invasion of Egypt to seize control of the Suez Canal. Jamaica was paid off in 1958 and sold for scrap in 1960.

Hi 1776, do you know if Jamaica had any differences in her configuration that would make her different from the Fiji-Class ship that's already in the game (other than her service record I mean)?

Hello blauflamme22

Yes true Jamaica was a Fiji-Class ship . I haven't crosschecked her armament/weapons vs other Fiji-class ships. Perhaps her AA vs better considering her role on CV escorts. The point is it would be a fun ship to play and considering her historic roles I'm sure lot of players would buy this ship to their collection. Premium ships are added not just for new content but for fun too. Look at the HMS Leander vs HMS Perth. She is also identical to Leander yet they made some changes to Perth not my favorite ship but as an Aussie I was happy to buy it and add it to my collection.

With Jamaica they may have some difference from the rest of the Fiji class but if not I would make her AA better as a premium ship (considering her cv escort duties in her history) or perhaps the development team finds other traits that would differ her from the rest.

All in all it would be fun to captain her regardless and I would be happy to pay for her.

Cheers brother

October 16 1944

Taken in hand by HM Dockyard Portsmouth for refit prior to planned deployment with British Pacific Fleet.

Work undertaken included:

Replacement of X Turret by two 2Pdr Pom-Pom mountings.

Aircraft Warning, Surface Warning and Fire Control Radar outfits modernised.

For details of development and use of radar in RN see RADAR AT SEA by D Howse

 Aircraft Homing Beacon fitted.

Right, so the refit would put her in line with Achilles in terms of how she differentiates from the standard Fiji (I have a request for Achilles to be considered, it also had the X turret replaced with some pom poms.) An upgraded AA suite would change the play style a bit. I should not that Perth was actually a Modified Leander which differentiated quite a bit from the original design.

Thanks for the clarification blauflamme22,

I have just read the post on the Achilles and it looks like very similar upgrade to the Jamaica. If one of the two ships will be considered to be developed in my opinion the Jamaica should get the green light for the sake of diversity. What I really love and appreciate in the way WOWS team approach this game is including ships from all corners of the world. (Polish destroyer was a nice touch) One ship from the ANZAC side was presented in Perth. It would be nice to see one from the Caribbean too especially Jamaica that fought in such a key battles and survived them all.

Thanks for your consideration I love this game

Hope you will add Jamaica blauflamme22 and wows team :)

Have a great day

I agree, diversity is good, but just for clarification, Jamaica was named for the colony but was entirely british crewed, and spent most of her service nowhere near the territory. That said, the more ships the merrier.

That is true, good point. Her missions were in the North Atlantic, Mediterranean (Egypt area) and around Korea. She been around but sadly only her name ties her to the Caribbean. Nevertheless she had a good run and at least her name represented (then British) the Island of Jamaica from the Caribbean. It would be cool to sail her around with her modified setup.
