How to nicholas? ... or rather, how to USNDD?

after future of IJNDD is getting dimmer and dimmer, I decide to go back and try regrind USNDD after quit for a long time.

most recent USNDD is clemson...

 

thing look fine in clemson, it's pretty fun actually.

 

once I got Nicholas 'first hull' is still okay and fun, till I get XP enough to upgrade hull B

...I notice that hull B will lose 1 gun turret, but rate of fire is like double... oh! this ought to be fun!

but when I get into game....

 

....oh... wow... look at those shell... are they really try to shoot into orbit??

I can't even see my own shell in scope, all I see is after a while it will rain downward at enemy

 

I can't hit a thing at distance

back to port, I see that shell velocity drastically reduce in hull B

look like I have to adjust my 'feeling' in aiming big time!

 

don't misunderstand, I'm not complaining.

 

I KNOW full well that these ship is powerful in my IJNDD life that I have to constantly runaway from them.

it just that I don't know how to use it effectively with sub-orbital shell

I think about going back to hull A but take a look, most USNDD have this slow velocity shell so I have to get use to it.

 

so here I ask an advice ... how to USNDD, how to sub-orbital shell

how to shot-out and getting detect but not get wrack by enemy CL/CA

Nicholas still has a tolerable detection, so just adjust your aim and try to adapt for the first few games. You'll soon understand the pain of playing a Mahan, getting detected from 7,7km where your shells take like 6s to land.

It appears I have been summoned. 
 

Anyway in general for USN DDs, you have excellent guns (that can only hit DDs reliably within 7km, CA within 10km, and BBs within 11km).
The Nicholas has pretty workable concealment (6.7km stock), good gun DPM, and somewhat usable but close range torps (which gets better as you tier up).

 

In general, you would want to push into caps, because at that tier the only thing you need to watch out for are german DDs (which you outspot anyway)
Once you are spotted, just keep going until the enemy DD start firing, then smoke up and immediately hide in it while the enemy DD gets permaspotted for 20s.
And then after dealing your damage you maneuvre to avoid potential torps.
And great job now you have chased enemy DD out of cap and are capping.

also personally i think seeing Melon and R3n play US DDis a great way to be better.... because of their guides now i have Benson in my port after 40 match of Mahan

XP_ON op, please teach me the way too!

 

General terms of USN DD up to T7 is patience due to your larger detection. Do not take upgraded hull that loses one of your guns. Every extra guns help in your fight against other DD's. 

 

Islands is your best friend. Use then to lob shells from behind while u laugh at them as they can't hit u back.

U have to lead quite abit due to orbital shells but once u r used to it. BB hates u ALOT. 

 

Gud luck in ur grind. It's worth the time. 

P.S - The feeling of IJN dd turning away from u while u shoot them down is absolutely glorious

which hull do you guys use for farragut/mahan/benson?

I used B hull for both Mahan and Benson. C hull Benson is for trolling if u division with a CV (Benson C hull has dfaa but u sacrifice 1 turret for it)

 

Farragut i think B hull too. Need recheck again. Just make sure u have 5 guns with u as per mentioned. Every gun helps in your fight against other DD's

​Benson rocks!!! Have been so reluctant to move her captain on to the Fletcher because the Benson is so much fun

but when it's other nation... my finger tend to runaway like back in my IJNDD days...

look like I have to muster my courage in getting into a knife fight more

well, tier 5 Nicholas is still in safe tier which credit never go minus, I'll keep on playing it!

I use the b hull too, but then again, once in a while, i would run into some stupidly persistent cv players.

 

I used C on Farragut and B on everyone else

 

Btw that 18 planes shotdown record are Shoukaku's

that's a lot of plane kills for a faraggut

DD hunting and kiting. Cruiser completly rekt you, so don't have any funny idea 1v1 them. Do try to spot torp and leave smoke for team.
