why aoba, myoko, mogami, ibuki, and zao have "strange" torpedo layout?

i think tenryu, kuma, and furutaka are the normal IJN cruiser, yeah atago too

maybe it's japanes enginer fault

Because IRL, torpedoes could be set to adjust their course via their internal gyroscopes - so an entire squadron would typically launch all their torpedoes at the same time and synchronize their torpedoes to turn accordingly to create a parallel spread. Light cruisers/Destroyer Leaders like the Tenryuu and Kuma class, as well as destroyers, didn't have spare tonnage to waste for the sort of protected torpedo rooms that the bigger heavy cruisers could afford to have.

IRL its Mainly because of IJN Mass torpedo Tactics dont require "Forward facing Torps Launcher", so The angle on Mogami or Myokos were never posses any problem to begin with

In A sense, Near Aft is Better to put Torpedoes Launcher.

IJN use pure oxygen Torpedo, it doesnt appear in game - but there always  Oxygen tank near Torpedo Launcher.

Pure oxygen Tank IJN use, is Larger (due to their Torpedo is larger by default) and so more prone to exploding (each were 3 Tons of Explodable materials, afterall - multiplied by The Number she carried + Spare + Lots of 100% pure Oxygen tanks - imagine how many Tons of explodable materials there)

Thats why IJN torpedo launcher were more protected - fully enclosed in Turret - design (or in case of Cruiser, Protected by Splinter deck on top)

Atago Torps layout actualy put serius Explosion Hazard in mid-ships. that can cripple if not outright sunk the ship if struck by stray shell

There 6 IJN cruiser, sunk because their own Torpedo related accident

Mogami Layout were supposed to fix, those problem - by pushing the hazard away from centermass of the ship. (though ironicly, She herself fall victim to her own torpedo related accident)

In a sense, Zao have best layout that emphasis on Ship Survivability to Battle damage.

If all those torps Explode, the most dangerous thing happen would be Broken Rudder instead of Outright detonation

In fact, many Japan Naval Designer - like ViceAdmiral Yuzuru Hiraga - were even opposing the idea of puting highly - prone to exploding Oxygen torpedo on Cruiser

However, Top IJN Planner deemed the risk were worthed - since torpedo Attack were bread and butter of IJN strateegy

and the best IJN Designer come up with were to Jettison all the Torpedoes when ship under heavy fire

Very nice explanation from humusz o7

-----

Based on IJN CA play style, other than Zao, the torpedo firing arc isn't really a big problem :D
