Teach a Noob- Japanese Destroyers

After my recent return I decided to try IJN destroyers for the first time in 6 months, and bought the Wakatake. I watched a few videos, followed the steps, and topped the leaderboard in my first random battle. If only it had been more than beginner's luck...

I have a lot of trouble playing destroyers.

I begin the game by engine-boosting into the best capture point on domination. Usually, I ensure a cruiser or two is backing me up, but they just seem to melt to enemies behind me every time. If the capture is successful, I look for an enemy, but I rarely find the players who sail in straight lines for long. I die frequently from being left out alone when my support melts or simply get surrounded on all sides while trying to ambush from behind an island.

I'm not sure of the basic strategy of destroyer play at all.

Teach a noob destroyers please :)

Honest opinion here, start with USN and/or USSR DDs. IJN DDs are not newbie friendly. Easy to play because of concealment and all, but hard to do well. Keeping the enemies at the edge of your detection level and stalking them is something that requires a lot of driving discipline.

So should I enter caps or not etc.? What's the first, second, third etc thing to do in the basic strategy and what should I look for?

IJN DD is doubtly the hardest Destroyer to play.

With Eurobeat help. I see a lot of WASD hax on tier 5 (no more sealclubbing)

How to say? U trust your heart and let go your torps. :D

In tier 5. If the BB is heading towards you. You can already let go of your torps from 8km..

Higher above is slight a pain in grinding.

Probably you wait for IJN Gunboats to come out first :D

Uhhh....

I will release my secret here.....

To hit more torpedo

First, look at your enemy team

Some uses WASD hack

and rest don't even use a keyboard....

Target the second first.....

Second use the stupid situation awareness.

Because situation awareness don't show what exactly ship is detecting SB.

So some BB or CA or even DD think he is detected because he fired,

not by you.

Final dropping torpedo inside smoke or island gap

increases a chance of hitting SB.

But before that, cap is really important.

So you are doing great job!

Like everyone said, IJN DDs are the hardest to do well in. It's a test of patience and being able to predict your enemies movement, honestly. The game play is too slow and boring for me that I completely stopped playing at minikaze .

I'd recommend going for RU DD for ease of play and exciting game play because it's purely run and gun.

One thing- never ever fire your gun(depending on what ship) unless spotted or [censored]....

Bad advice, right here.

OP, an IJN DD has guns. You may not fire as often as the other DD lines but you have to if you want to remain competent. Knowing when is an entirely different set of advice.

1. Japanese DD cannot win an early game cap race. Every other DD will eat you up with their superior guns. Later in the match when enemy DD are damaged, you can win contests with good aim.

2. Your torpedoes are NOOB killers. Fire spreads in the early game at the marker to find out who hasn't learnt the WASD hack. Its surprising how many hits you can get in the first 5 minutes.

3. You have guns for a rwason. Use them judiciously. If you have cruiser or BB support throw HE shells at their targets to assist.

4. Midgame you can sneak through gaps in the line and go CV hunting.

don't fire your gun 'unless' you are sure that you will not being focus fire.

     - if there near dead DD but he has CA as an escort... Don't fire, 20 sec of expanding detection is enough to got yourself killed.

if you want to fire your gun, pay close attention to enemy CA, if he too far or behind island then go right ahead and deal some damage.

if you fire your gun without considered surrounding... all enemy CA will yelling 'Flesh Meat!!!' and ignore everything to kill you.

low tier (1-5) IJNDD can't stealth torp runaway enemy even it's BB, due to short range torp

pick enemy that head toward your torp range and launch it then hope for the best.

stay away from those plane! either CV plane or seaplane, or catapult FT

low tier IJNDD is still easy to play.

but after tier 5 ... hell start to break loose...

Well, for me the following always seem to work (in Kutuzov, Sims, Blyska and stuffs like that)

At far

| Gray area | ------------------<<<<<<<<<<<<| torp here |>>>>---------------------------------------------------| actual ship |

At close

-----| gray area | ------

| torp here | >>>>>>-------------------------------------| actual ship |

Sometimes, just randomly make a wall.

Thanks to peeps who overdo WASD.

Sometimes, just randomly make a wall.

Yep. Since WG is nerfing rebalancing Torpwalls, make sure you do it now while you still can.

On a more serious note, Stein has the right idea. Tier 7 and up have quite decent guns if used at invisifire range (Read: max out gun range with AFT (tier 4 skill)). The main issue past that point however is speed, which you need if you want to be able to stay at the border of detection range for torping.

On firing torps and where to aim them, I would really love to share how it's done, but it would be difficult to do so without the use of the word "intuition". The best bet is to play BBs or platoon with BBs to react to torp spreads yourself, and note how semi-decent players would dodge torps, and then use that knowledge to second-guess the enemy. The dodge patterns would differ by heading, speed, or whether they are in combat with other guys.

This is when I would then break down into a passive-aggressive rant on how the Type 93 Oxygen Torpedos are horribly nerfed, and if you want to play a decent Torpedo Boat in the high tiers, the USN DD line or the IJN cruiser line is a better choice

1. Watch enemy ship

2. Watch who is he going to face from your side,

3. Decide, shall he advance? shall he retreat? Will he start turning in or turning away.

4. Is he going to accelerate out of the turn. Is he going to avoid a fire or torp and change course.

5. Trust the lead indicator with 1 salvo, use the other as your intuition says.

6. Bait them into your torps, do not alert the enemy why he is tunnel visioned.

7. Your guns are for kiting, Do not engage with just about anything. You only engage something that is low HP and you can finish, or someone who is busy with something else, or you are in smoke.

8. Never torp unless you are in front line. Don't be typical IJN DD player who harms teammates more than the enemy. Specially never target enemy if he is brawling with a friendly because your torps will be problematic for the friendly.

9. See a cv group heading for you, run straight to nearest friendly CA or USN/KM BB.

So what destroyer line should I go for if I want to learn to be a destroyer and learn to be that guy leading the team and taking the capture points early in the game like I see so many replays of online?

USN

but if you can find a div mate to support you, you will be much more powerfull.

imagine going cap in Sims, while a Belfast behind you radar any ship in the cap

Hey! Russian DDs are good too. They can scare away any ship with their faster reload, shell velocity and it's arc. and talking about Belfast supporting, any DD can become good to best against an opponent. And don't forget their speed.

Step 1: Obtain Shimakaze

Step 2: Unlock F3s

Step 3: Wait for enemy DD to panic and stay in smoke

Step 4: launch full spread at smoke

Step 5: Free Devastating strike and enemy morale plummets.
