Total re-thinking for CVs

All aircraft can re-arm when they return to the carrier – to either a fighter loadout, bomber loadout or torpedo loadout. But only TB type planes can carry torps (we have a whole keyboard to toggle loadouts)

All aircraft can engage in dogfights.

So first, all carriers (for each tier) will have the same number off squadrons and planes per squadrons. CV players will choose their type of planes in port or by upgrade, some planes will be better at carrying torps while others will be better in dogfights.

In battle a CV player might arm all his aircraft with a fighter loadout, fighters will be the best for this role but TBs will able to do this role too – with no torpedo.

Or the player might arm with a strike loadout, fighter carrying bombs but they will be a little slower and less manoeuvrable

Or with a balance loadout, the choice/tactic will be theirs in the field of battle.

Depending on how the battle is playing out the player can re-arm his squadrons to suit

All loadouts will affect the planes by weight/speed/engine power/aerodynamics

One other idea is that bombers should have a high chance of a citadel hit with the bomb going down the funnel.

Altogether this would break away from fixed carrier loadouts

very interesting and also historically accurate. Pretty sure fighters took bombs and dropped them and started fighting other plans irl. Also they were able to strafe ships to set fires. Maybe add that in the game so they can strafe ships to set fires or kill some secondaries/AA but when they do it they have a higher risk of being shot down. Pretty sure DB and TB had .50 cal mounted to shoot other planes too. Maybe make it so DB and TB can strafe too but less damage to planes and more effective against ships

I disagree.

When it comes to bomb loadouts, historically, the USAF/USN planes win. Almost every single fighter plane can equip 250lb/100kg bombs and are very much capable of still flying fast compared to a bomber which, in-game, would only be limited to the same bomb until 500lb/250kg bombs are unlocked. It would make dive bombers inferior by default given their handling and AA.

Yosh~

Time for the in-game reasons:

  1. The number of plane types per carrier are already balanced. This means that you aren't allowed to have dual-purpose fighter-bombers because it would defeat the purpose of a dedicated bomber of the same loadout.
  2. It would allow bombers to function with less escorts; They have rear gunners for personal protection at the moment, but they aren't meant to fight other fighters; The guns mounted on bombers are for strafing.
  3. It would render flight mods useless, and would give carriers far more versatility than they're supposed to have: Strike, AA, or a balance of both. They have their strengths and weaknesses.
  4. It would change the meta greatly. Giving USN/IJN ships the same amount of planes per squadron? What will distinguish the two nations' carriers? This would make their performance identical.
  5. It would require squadron counts for all carriers to be readjusted, see no. 1.

If we look at say just the planes in the battle of Midway; http://www.militaryfactory.com/aircraft/battle-of-midway-aircraft.asp

You can see that these aircraft were very much role based, i.e. the TBD Devastator would be a crappy fighter with just a single gun forward and rear gunner, not to mention being slow and not exactly agile.  But it can have a bomb loadout instead of torpedos so there is that option if they ever allowed it in game.

It would be more interesting to look at individual aircraft and try and bring those traits in; i.e. F4F wildcat although outmatched by the zero at the time could take some hits and had good armour for the pilot.  They also had essentially rubber bladders in the fuel tank that created a vacuum for the fuel as it was used so flammable gas didn't build up in the tank ... like all the zeros did.  Zeros didn't have armour, the whole Samurai and the plane is the pilots extension and so on philosophy.  Also a bullet in the fuel tank caused an explosion due to it's design.

Wildcats also employed the manoeuvre the Thach Weave in the battle of Midway, in one instance a small group of wildcats pulled most of the CAP patrol from the carriers leaving the dive bombers a free reign.  Be interesting to weave in some different abilities for all the aircraft to give the loads outs more variety and tactical /balance options.

And to add, if you gave some aircraft abilities and they were used, you could balance them out by having a higher cooldown once they land or some other mechanism;   i.e. Thach Weave allows 1 squadron to fight against 2+ squadrons with fairer odds.  Historically Thach's four (?) Wildcats were attacked with over 16 (?) enemy aircraft, they dispatched 4 zeros for a loss of 1.

Need to go check sources, a WW2 doc was on History channel not that long ago and had a whole episode on Midway.

Well I don’t think carriers are balance between nations, with the current AA buffs they’re not even balance against other ship classes (mainly CVs vs USN BBs and CAs). Air superiority or strike loadouts are pre-set in port so match maker decides who plays against who. If equal nation and equal loadouts then the match is balance and it then comes down to a battle of skill. Else it’s a miss match, 6 fighters against 4 (you have to group all your squadrons to balance the fight)  or who can sink the other carrier first or a battle of avoidance or some other non-balance tactic.

To refine the suggestion, fighters and dive bombers would merge to form fighter bombers.

So then to get battle tactics who must have a re-arming option – including the option for torpedo bombers to fly without a torpedo.

You could have a HE or AP bomb re-arming option  (AP deck armor or delayed fuse)

In the Independence I’ve used air superiority loadouts and more that not I’ve won the air battle and been left with no dive bombers or dive bombers against USN BBs and CAs, useless and nothing to do with fighters but scout. Here re-arming has merit.

Note, Iowa and the Izumo both have 3 main turrets and 12 barrels but are completely different ships with different gun specs. With the same number squadrons and planes the difference would be plane specs.

Finally I know this would never happen, too much work/change. We all know that the suggestion box is just one big black hole but maybe it might spark an idea for the developers.
