If you could pick 12 Ships for a fleet battle, why? Discussion

So, this is a continuation of a chat that was happening with the supertesters, background to the chat is we were discussing the ideal fleet makeup with Tier 10 ships.

Now there are two scenarios, the first is an open map like Ocean. The other is a more closed map. (Take your pick on this one)

For me, we decided on the following makeup (I'll list the ships here)

1. Moskva

2. Moskva

3. Zao

4. Zao

5. Des Moines

6. Yamato

7. Yamato

8. Yamato

9. Yamato

10. Gearing

11. Gearing

12. Japanese CV

The Moskva / Zao Cruiser backbone, this combined force gives a perfect balance of outright dpm, hitting power, speed and anti-dd / AA capability. Add the Des Moines for it's dpm as a support cruiser.

BB's - King of the Sea, Yamato, simply provide the needed hitting power you need in a battle ship force. the ability to project the sheer weight of firepower with this configuration will make anyone think twice about engaging.

The DD's were a tough question, but after a discussion we settled on the Gearing DD, it's torps, detection range and overall capabilities meant this was a simple decision to make.

The Japanese CV, allows us to project torpedo's and forward scouts without the need to a ship to go in a certain direction.

we tended to agree thou, in a tighter map we would look toward the US for the main firepower of the BB fleet.

But, I'm curious as to what other people would consider a good makeup, how would you put together your fleet.

Was this thread taken down for changes? i was about to post then it says error :<

1. Gearing

2. Gearing

3. Shimakaze

4. Shimakaze

5. Khabarovsk

6. Khabarovsk

7. Zao

8. Zao

9. Des Moines

10. Yamato

11. Yamato

12. Hakuryuu

much DD? yeah i find them good if we are talking about "slighty realistic fleet-fleet engagment"
2/3 caps
the fleet will split to 2 goups each have
1 Gearing
1 Shimakaze
1 Khabarovsk
1 Zao
1 Yamato

Des moines will be on stand by to assist whichever group that needs help
Zao will provide long range artillery- based of how i usually play
Shimakaze will do area denial or anti-BB torpedo
Khabarovsk/Gearing will be main scout/capper and provide protection for Shimakaze
Hakuryuu will provide air support
i think this will work for most maps
passive defensive is gud

so what happen to 2 H41 ? XD they became yamatos ?

12 Straight Atagos, all with full camo build. Why, you may ask? Because being able to stealth torp is an endless source of fun, and there is a certain beauty in seeing one of the largest heavy cruisers sneek around like a Russian DD

Cuz Zao cannot stealth torp

I think the real answer would be 12 Kitakamis

*laughs* how bad was not well?

Div'ed with a friend in a Cleveland, me in a Hatsuharu.

A Cleveland with DfAA did nothing- He didn't even last two minutes in the ocean map.

The CV spawns were botched. Two CVs per side literally spawned 1km within each other in the center of the map.

The UI was blinking from processing all those planes- FPS was still 41fps, at least.

Chat server was inaccessible after the match, we needed a client reset.

Music was also botched after the match.

All the AI Hakuryus huddled together for AA like penguins bracing for a tough winter.

The match ended in 12 minutes with none of the 3 cap points captured; All from losing too many points from CV losses.

12 Umikazes

Someone tell me why the Umi is only tier 2. It has the best camo, shoots 4 torps every 24 seconds with a acquisition range of only .8km. The torps themselves arent too bad. If they gave this thing more health it can easily be tier 7ish

yes umikaze have better torp until minekaze due to superior range and reload speed

i think tachibana has better camo cuz concealment 99/100

2 desmoines(AA build), 6 gearing, 2 233 hakuryu. group in 2 with 1 des moines and 3 gearings each group and will proceed to get 1 base each. gearing will surround the des moine and provide smoke for her(they can make the des moines invisible in base by smoking 1 by 1), while spamming torps and scouting enemy DD. Des moines will keep them immune to aircraft and wreck any dds that will come. Hakuryus will join forces and kill any BB in a single run(if there is a BB), scout and provide support wherever needed.

I'll give a shot with an unpopular ship(s) with the likes of:

8 Hindenburgs

2 Montanas

2 Hakuryu

Everyone being an AA bubble and all the Hindenburgs with Hydro and loading all AP. Virtually immune to torps and air strikes, they shoot at all sides. One ship can't exactly angle efficiently on 2 sides. Montanas for meat shields and if ever an unlucky opponent decides to angle against a Hindenburg the wrong way, they'll eat 12 16 inch shells. Hakuryu will both be 4/2/2 mainly for air superiority and scouting(anti-invisifing). The strike squadrons will only focus on an enemy Yamato, or maybe DDs. Fleet Tactics basically involve YOLO'ing on two sides.

Fantasy team?

8 CV's

2 CA (AA escort)

2 DD's

or just 12 CV, strike force would be hilarious.

Wildcard

12 DD wolf back, for a constant very large torp walls.  Would need to share smoke screens for AA cover.

1 USN AS CV

1 IJN Strike CV

1 x Montana

1 x DM

2 x Zao

2 x Moskva

2 x Gearing/Kharb

2 x Shima

3 Battle Groups:
BG 1 - CVs, Montana and DM
BG 2 & 3 - Zao, Moskva, GunDD, Shima

BG 1 has the AA and Gunnery to deal with any break through problems

BGs 2 & 3 are mobile with strike power with counter's to enemy DD's

Strike CV to target enemy CV/BB

AS CV to provide support and cap visibility

Finally, Montana getting some love.

only for the general nature of the role

If I was doing a BB centric/agressive line up I would use 4 x Yamato with support and drop the CV's all together

1x AS USN CV

2x Strike IJN CV

1x DM/Hindenburg

1x Moskva

2x Zao

1x Montana

2x Yamato

1x Gearing

1x Kbab

2 battle groups:

Direct action group - 2 Yamato, 2x Zao, Moskva, Kbab.

Support Fleet - 3 CVs, DM/Hindy, Montana, Gearing

Could also detach DM/Hindy, Montana and Gearing as a raiding/flanking fleet depending on enemy deployment

I remember us considering this, it would work replacing the cv with another dd.... but i'm just not convinced that one ship is worth two squads of planes for scouting

As the discussion raged there were 2 camps - those that would camp it up and play more defensively, the 2nd build is an aggressive build, you don't wait at all but push from the get go
