Ever feel sorry for planes?

Now we all know warships are crewed by people. Hundreds, at least, thousands for some.

However, because they're inside turrets, I simply think of them as nothing but automated turrets. Their accuracy with secondaries is laughable unless your captain and ship specialize in them. When you see the giant turrets turn, it makes it feel as though the ship itself is nothing but a machine- A bot that sees and engages targets at the player's whim, something like a giant remote-controlled ship- Not an actual ship crewed by people, but by robots.

I can't say the same for planes though. Watching them struggle through enemy fire, seeing their victories against enemy squadrons and the very act of the CV player always trying to conserve their lives due to their very limited numbers. It makes the planes feel as though they're the only lives the player cares about- Ships get inevitably shelled, but you don't see the casualties. When a plane goes down, they go down in balls of fire that make you wonder if that life was spent for a greater cause.

The unfortunate bit is that no matter what game a CV player enters, lives are guaranteed to be lost. On some ships like destroyers or even the fortunate CA or BB, it's entirely possible to enter and exit the match without a single scratch. But a CV player? Nein. Someone has to die. I haven't heard of a single game with absolutely zero plane casualties.

The fact they get replaced at the beginning of each match makes them feel as though they are but eager, replaceable pawns. Imagine the scenario in real life.

A carrier sorties out and survives a failed mission. The captain and her crew then welcome the fresh batch of pilots to serve aboard their ship again, and again, and again.

Imagine the feeling of greeting someone who'll work besides you for a common cause, but will ultimately lose their life one day following your orders. The carrier's crew get detached. They'll go back to their resupply ports feeling nothing but the angst of carrying these eager, obedient souls to their death repeatedly like a reaper. It's a curse.

Not dying is definitely a curse. The high-survival rate of CVs in matches are a curse.

"I'll be the fleet's ace pilot someday!"

"Someday, someday, you will be..."

Kay, now to sacrifice another batch of fighters against AA-mod carriers so my bombers can reach their targets.

I feel like its more of a soul of the ships and planes, kinda makes ARP ships more fitting considering we have InvisiCru.

AA guns fire on their own, damage can be repaired while you're getting shot at and you can even repair the frickin' rudder somehow.

With carrier-borne planes, I like to imagine them as a big family with A6M2 Pilot #7 maybe meeting up with A6M2 Pilot #12 while in port to share lunch whilst reminiscing that totally sick strafe they did a few hours ago and having a good laugh.

I never fell sorry for those destroyer-chasing fly boys.

In fact, I laugh when my peashooter AA equipped Minekaze somehow manages to shoot one down.

I don't feel sad, they are all made out of Nanomateria and fades back to dust after they are destroyed. :teethhappy:

I feel sorry that the planes now litter our nice clean seas.  (Well they were back then)

They make ideal snapper reefs.

RIP to the 17 planes killed by my hatsuharu in one game.

I got a great idea! Have IJN DD do the AA escort. Super effective!

(Skim the NA forum if you don't get the joke)

I can't believe I got the joke myself.

RIP planes, you will be remembered...

... until the next match

It's actually more sad for the cruiser planes since they are de facto scouts, and they just fly in stupid circles. You cant even turn it away once it spots the hidden Atlanta, and then it gets vapourised.

One of my sons got out of bed one night and wandered into the office late when I was playing.  Scared the crap out of me when he asked a question about what I was playing and so on.  Eventually he asked where all the sailors were and where was the pilots parachute!

Anyway it did get me wondering about what it would look like with all these miniature sailors running around the ship, manning some of the AA guns.  Standing around in the bridge and railing with binoculars etc.  Fire crews putting out fires, sailors on fire :-(  And when the ship goes down jumping off or trying to get boats out.  I guess you could troll your victims by running through the survivors though so maybe not a great idea !

Maybe total war did better at this part. they have real humans walking on the ship and get blow off by shells. after the ship sunk, they stayed on the surface of water and do nothing.

However, WG said, humans are too complicated to be added in the game

This is the same like hypotethical question :

Superman is mass murderer in man of steel

or Captain America kill thousand of American people in Winter soldier (first movie was ok since they were Nazis)

Prof X kill millions people in Xman

etc

When you overthinking Background Character it will ceased being Fun

hahaha
