Because I found out Nicholas Cage is gonna star in a movie based on said ship's manly tear inducing last run, I reread my bit on this lumpy cruiser... and it was still manly tear inducing. Badposting all the way.

I PRESENT TO YOU THE INDIANAPOLIS.

The little sister of Portland in all her days.

What could one say at most with this ship? Well for starters, she's a treaty cruiser based from her big sister Portland (yes, the same Portland that gave your beloved chatspam destroyer a monumental whack because lolcoup de grace) and you could say that as one, she was still within acceptable bounds because she never really weighed so much that would be considered a violation. Note that if observing treaty specs, the ship would be armed with 8 inch guns and not go over 10,000 long tonnes, and the Portlands did exactly that as they were the second to the last treaty cruiser class the New Orleans to follow this. However, there was the addendum of the "escalation clause" wherein the cruisers are to reach better tonnage, if not removed the limits altogether should any signatory or nation that could build a sizable navy break any restrictions so which is why the Baltimore was technically the best treaty cruiser made despite babysitting carriers all day long and giving offshore bombardment when it is needed. The Des Moines, despite being keeled at 1945-46, is a postwar cruiser so she doesnt count. This ship, however got her tenure immortalized not as a good serving treaty cruiser because most treaty cruisers that served were the ones who saw the most heated of combat so she's part of that, but because of that fate and of her crew.

Sharks not included (I'm sorry...).

Indianapolis was protected with about 5 inches of belt, about 3 inches of deck, an inch and a quarter of conning tower, 2 and a half inches of turret for her bit while as built, her offensive layout comprised of nine improved 8 inch guns housed in fairly newer turrets that were the predecessors of what the New Orleans had and the successors of the ones on Northamptons and the Pensacolas in the AB-X layout, some old 5 inch DP guns, some saluting guns and were later added with arrays of 20mm Oerlikons and 40mm Bofors. The ship could run at about 33 knots and it was actually quite good to run at that speed and protected at the same time.

Regarding the class though, it has been said the the class were basically a facemelt of the Pensacola and Northampton whereas the New Orleans were of the Portland and Northampton. Thing is, Northampton's bit should have been thinner so as to save weight to observe treaty restrictions though that proved bad for the lead ship because she sank with two torpedo strikes during Tassafaronga.

Two tone dazzle camo I forgot what measure.

She had a normal commissioning and shakedown cruise and was busy learning how to pummel the shit out of pretend enemies by shooting at an atoll when the Japanese paid Pearl Harbor a visit when she was tasked to track where the planes came form to no avail.

It eventually got really hectic for the ship as she was used as flagship, escort, screen and shore bombardier all at the times such as participating in nearly making Tarawa un-exist because they kept pummeling the shit out of the small strip of atoll throughout the night and Saipan where she blasted the crap out of enemy defenses as per pre-landing bombardment and was one of the ships to be tasked to pummeling the crap out of Japan near the war's end when she got a unique mission... a mission that cost her.

Nice paint.

Indianapolis was tasked to carrying components and radiating yellow rock Uranium for a super sekrit bomb that was the then-atom bomb right in the moments when the Trinity test proved that a bomb of that caliber can make anything un-exist within its blast radius (cue J. Robert Oppenheimer's quote from the Bhavagad Gita: "now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds") that NOBODY EXCEPT CLEARED PEOPLE MUST KNOW lest the Japanese learn of this or even the Russians and so had to literally ninja move to Tinian to deliver the shit and then ninja back to report to the task force camping in Leyte to move to pummel the shit out of Okinawa and plant their flag on it when the cruiser was hit by torpedoes from I-58 which also ninja moved there and the cruiser started listing which ended with the sinking by keeling over and finally going under, leaving the crew in the water with inadequate lifeboats. It was there that the surviving crew were in the shit; nobody exactly knew they were there as they were coming from a super secret transport mission that even CENTCOM on Leyte can't even effectively track them despite the cruiser actually pinging for help when she got ninja torped and did not get any response just like moron teammates in ships who don't give a damn when you are actually asking for help and die ingloriously without contributing anything. For nearly four days the survivors were in the water suffering so hard it wasn't funny and others who couldn't take the crucible offed themselves and some met sharks in the most vicious way possible until they were rescued though not all of them lived after that as some had a chat with ol' Grim afterwards. It wasn't over then as the captain got court martial as a result and during his late years offed himself with his own revolver before he got exonerated for a mess up he didnt commit on purpose from declassified archives.

Seriously, that was the most messed up way you could ever go because you sank your own ship "without doing squat". "Ideals are peaceful, history is violent" indeed. A part of me wishes that any salt dog who is serving or has served their tenure wouldn't face the same injustice the poor captain had endured, I mean it was just wrong to degrade him militarily for it, though men still remember what happened though, the grueling ordeal and all.

I hope the film doesn't go sideways in the portrayal of this to be honest and Two Steps from Hell's Men of Honor adds manly tear shedding.

Listening to this song made me remember a friend's father whose tenure in the army was so long ago had cried a bit when we listened to this as he asked we told him the song's name was "men of honor"

That is all.

Derp.exe has stopped working.

She delivered the components and the radiating rock to their destination point and was on her way to rejoin her task force when she got torpedoed.

I'm just wondering why there are so many tier 7 US premiums and not a tier 8 one yet?

But the poor Indianapolis's Captain ended up getting the blame for the disaster of losing his ship and crew (he didn't zig zag and wasn't following proper protocol or something?), and I did read the book about a boys fight to clear the name of the wrongfully blamed captain, who did his best to save his crew and even got off the doomed ship last after sending a transmission for help, great story, worth reading as it also includes the ships combat history as a "Lucky ship" before she got hit by a Kamikaze before her final mission.

add a tier to the portland class and give it a buff? nope... keep this at tier 7. the gun dispersion and real gun velocity make it better than the new orleans ( at tier 8) with a better profit-per-game than a tier 8 premium (as in the expenses are almost negligible). this thing in-game has worse stats than the NO, but it plays like a superior ship to the tier 8 CA.

seriously wg, the NO needs a buff if your tier 7 premium is better than the tier 8 ca fully upgraded... just laughable.
