Who is at the moment enjoying this cumbersome ship as I am? I am a newcomer.

I may not continue to the next US Cruiser the Pepsicola. If so I will stay longer on this ship and want to hear and share with other Cleveland captains (or other US Cruisers captains).

In record I did much better in Phoenix. However, I am making progress on adapting the Cleveland's characteristic. How do you handle this ship?

- Feels good watching crazy AA fireworks overhead.

- Its somewhat cumbersome to handle.

Hello there!

I have about 300 battles in the cleveland and have no intentions of continuing down the line as of now. And its a Great ship and can easily carry a Game.

I have a 15 point captain on it and i Run an AA Build.

1.SA.

2.BFT.

3.Expert Marksman.

4.Vigilance.

5.Manual AA.

6.AFT.

With this build AA is just so deadly.Even shokaku's have a hard time getting their planes to drop..Cause they get wiped out before they even get to me!

And the AP is brutal at close range.I've taken out Atago's and mogami's at close range <9 to 10 kms. I feel confident about this ship. Ofc the changes after 0.5.3 affected it quite a bit it didn't make much impact on my gameplay.

On the downside it is pretty slow and stop's like a brick.I've tried the propulsion mod but that makes a very little difference. And the Armor..Great Armor for a cruiser, a steep angle can ricochet a good amount of BB shells.

Yeah the usn cruisers get really poor after Cheatland.

Spam the HE, upgrade fire skill and watch 'em burn.

Yeah it is easily to be set on fire. Feel too hot there.

Great info, thanks. I like this ship, agree on the deadly AA & easily ricochet shells when I angle it right. My weak point is I sometimes push too much when I try to angle, make myself as the primary target at the front line. I am working on it.

the ships after cleve arnt bad, they just need special care and handleing

The armor on Pepsicola looks thin for the class.. It has big guns though.

they are, but it's got much better firing arcs and AP then all the other ships of it's class, not to mention that it can do a bloody ballet on water with the rudder shift mod, you just have to play smart

You are encouraging me to get on Pepsicola, aren't you? Bloody ballet on water sounds tasty..

Same here. When I first got the Cleveland, I was disappointed because I couldn't carry games like when I was in the Phoenix. I simply cannot do the "circle of death" that both the Phoenix and Omaha does. However, if you play it regularly, you will get used to the turret playstyle of the Cleveland. As for its handling, I suggest you get the rudder shift upgrade as it is handy when you go DD hunting and you need to dodge torps.

Now with the Pensacola, at first I do not want to get it because of the negative reputation it got. Yeah, it's kinda hard to play stock, but  once you fully upgrade it, it's a very good ship! I had more good games in it than in the Cleveland because of good shell velocity and excellent AP. My advice: Free XP all the modules and get the Pepsi fully upgraded before you play it. :P

Oh, and one more thing, be sure to get Situational Awareness on your Cleveland and Pepsi. Pepsi has very high detectability. You do not want to get one-shotted by BBs at the beginning of the match.

Cleveland used to be much OP then the currently now with the current nerf of the ship and the AFT it getting from bad to worst but do not stop at Cleveland go for Pepsicola as the Pepsicola is great able to dealt Citadel up to tier 8 ships and it a totally full Citadel guns on it but with weak armour same as the Cleveland do not show your broadside.:look:

Thanks everyone for the great advice. I guess I will continue in Cleveland, until I play well enough and move on to the pepsi. I really like the AA guns on this one. Just pity can't do bloody ballet on water..

Just to reinforce what everyone has said, I run a similar (in fact i think it's the same) set up and this is how good she can be for AA with that set up.....I will also mention that the CV was a T7 Hiryuu whom I suspect repeatedly did not understand that he couldn't get past my AA and just kept sending his planes to me or the New Mexico I was escorting......

I also use this captain in my Atlanta, so those 16x 5 inch DP guns put up a decent amount of AA fire especially with the manual AA skill :)

Yeah the Cleveland is a great horse, reliable, great AA can pack a good punch and sustain a fair beating if you find yourself in a bit of trouble. My advice is if you can persevere through the horrible Pensacola which is surprisingly underwhelming in all respects to get to the New Orleans which is a lovely cruiser and then onto Baltimore which is in many ways an up-gunned and up-armoured Cleveland then continue your way up the tiers.

The T3 St Louis, Cleveland at 6, Orleans at 8 and Baltimore at 9 perform their duties of escort, DD & CA "hunter killers" really well and this is the type of cruiser skipper that I am and will most likely always be, I am also "puritan" which means that I don't use anything other than Allied Warships Soviet, USN and RN warships, I have heard great things about IJN Warships and Kriegsmarine Warships and I have faced them many times on all tiers and have to say they are probably superior to USN cruisers, or maybe that's just how it appears to me.

I suppose I also wanted to mention that the Atlanta (Premium) makes a great alternative to the T7 Pensacola, she is fast but has poor turning speed, her fast turret speed and re-load and ability to rain down a large number of shells makes her a really fun ship to play but beware of her paper thin armour. Well worth the money though to avoid having to play the Pensacola at 7.

Cheers guys

Dan
