I've been eyeing this tiny ass destroyer for a while and I'm kinda interested in it despite really not good at how to destroyer in-game or doing Eurododges like Eurobeat can in virtually ANY surface ship he uses. Probably the first of two badposts I'll make for the day because I'm a shlub as always.

I PRESENT TO YOU HMAS VAMPIRE (D68).

5dlceo.jpgNot THIS Vampire ya chuckleheads as this was the second ship to bear that name with pennant D11 of the Daring class. Oh and this Vampire is also alleged to have glorious hax installed aboard that she kept after decommissioning.

Not even THIS Vampire despite her being the personification of the actual ship in the Arpeggio series ya anime lugs. Don't mind the fact that she's using Father Anderson of Hellsing's bayonet pose.

THIS Vampire. Glorious V-W class destroyer.

Actually, I've wondered about this: the AU guys call them Vampire (I) and Vampire (II) which makes it rather interesting.

Originally named Wallace, the ship was completed as one of the destroyer leads for the V-W class which had surprisingly a lot of deviations of plans with two known deviations from the Admiralty themselves and some iterations being from Thornycroft. Now the class was considered the peak on how to British destroyer in WWI as they had a fairly newer design. Thing is, them being destroyer leads isn't that much different in ergonomics than their iterations (a destroyer lead is basically that pudgy destroyer that houses the commander of the flotilla. This role isn't that much different to the cruiser flotilla leader. Examples of this should be the Kievs and the Tashkents of Russia and the Gearings of the US. The Japanese had used light cruisers to be their flotilla leads I believe and even the intents of the Takaos could do that in capability as they were meant to be flagships), just that their internal compartments and superstructures were fairly different and if peering at a V-W from afar, you can't really tell much from their freaky silhouettes. Good thing Wallace was renamed Vampire afterwards and spent a considerable amount of time being bored and skulking around the Mediterranean and Home Islands before the Admiralty decided to give what little attention of care they had to their outlying colonies because they must serve the crown and not the crown serve them that the AU guys needed a bit of juice to have more ships and so sent some destroyers to Australia, Vampire being one of them.

Vampire when she was rolling with the RAN in how to destroyer.

The beefy destroyer had a reasonable... "reasonable"... set of guns at the time which included some 4 inch guns in high angle aka "I can elevate the gun as high as 75 degrees to shoot planes" mounts (question, do the AU guys also use British terms?) some 40mm Pompoms that increased in numerous numbers because the threat of the seaborne aircraft is getting in the shit, a couple of Lewis HMG's which were replaced with newer .303 HMG's, two pairs of triple tubes which later got replaced with quad mounts, a couple of slingshots and racks for depth charges.

This is the Lewis gun barrel with cooling jacket. Ignore the large as hell cooling jacket that looks like a used condom please.

A thing to note about the Lewis HMG aboard her which was replaced; the Lewis gun was a WWI MG which was actually quite good though never mind the unnecessarily big cooling jacket. It was drum fed to about 45 rounds right above where the bolt puts a round to the chamber for glorious automatic fire. Now as this was actually impressive, even the Lewis as a close-in AA gun had limitations such as poor magazine size despite shooting the same .303 round. The ship could run at about 35 knots which was actually reasonable, given that she was also an old vet in WWI.

A V-W line drawing. Because I can't find Vampire's anywhere or I'm bad at looking.

After a term of camping around in boring duty in Australian waters, the outbreak of World War 2 changed that and pretty soon she was sent along with a couple of destroyers to the European side where the Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels deemed them a "scrap iron flotilla" because they were old ships sent into a war of new ships in the water, and that they were piss poor, shoddy, 'old falling apart' (lol Pennsylvania) destroyers, but compared to the bull that was propaganda, they weren't really that. As a fun notion, they took that name and stuck with it. Vampire at the time was rolling as an anti-air and anti-sub escort in the Mediterranean that participated in runs such as the supply run for Tobruk and suffered severe damage which was reported to have one torpedo crewman die when the carrier Eagle was under attack by bombers. Her engines had a load of problems and she had to run back for repairs back at APAC and resumed her duties there.

Well... in APAC she saw some of the weirdest yet some of the most devastating things such as the loss of Repulse and Prince of Wales, the failed interception of a massive landing force because it was screened by a sizable force that contained light cruisers and eventually saw the carrier Hermes (the same carrier that could not join Force Z because lol too big in the canal and slow as balls) sink as well as herself when they were met with plane spam, the killing run the second wave after the planes rearmed in their carriers though most of the crew and the survivors from Hermes were saved on hospital ship Vita.

In-game wise, I believe this Vampire should likely be the first AU destroyer bearing the Australian ensign albeit in the tech tree bunching up with Warspite as part of the UK for tier 5. Her torpedoes are reasonable enough although I can't truly say for her guns in anti-surface role but its likely she'll have a surprising AA suite for a destroyer and good concealment. A part of me is going to assume that an AU guy fielding Vampire (I) is gonna laugh like a demented patient as he seal clubs his way through provided if the destroyer stats is potential murder.

Derp.exe has stopped working.

This ship exemplifies the classic European or Western design of destroyers at the time of post WW1 and up to the early 1930's.

Having an open bridges, open main gun mounts and a lack of AA and torpedo reloads, these ships were in a sense, "outdated" in the same way Dreadnoughts made regular Battleships obsolete by the Japanese Fubuki class design.

While these ships did serve with distinction, they were woefully outdated and against technologically superior foes and the menace of aircraft, its a wonder that these ships managed to survive so long.

I have to say I'm looking forward to seeing this ship in game and and possibly having it as a 1 off premium (for the RAN) like the Blyskawica for Poland wouldn't be bad either

But still, even as old to the point Goebbels called them the "Scrap Iron Flotilla", they still did their tenures. I find it rather strange why the V-W even with mods are said to be shit all the way.
