Battle of Cape Esperance

If anything, a night battle is one naval brawl you'd be needing a lot of training for to strike effectively as the enemy should be rattled and confused as you destroy them piecemeal...

... and then there's the Battle of Cape Esperance.

PREPARE FOR BS TL;DR.

Out of all the naval brawls during the Guadalcanal Campaign, I found this particular run to be rather funny.

Now Guadalcanal was starting to be a literal grindfest for both the US and the Japanese as the troops of the Rising Sun were actual hardcore campers and the US forces on the ground were sitting in their new airfield despite getting their ball sacks bombarded some nights by special HE rounds that were designed to hopefully crater the hell out of the airfield and destroy the planes there. As aerial strikes were looming during the Guadalcanal campaign, the Japanese had to resort to rapid transport runs in the night to bulwark the hell out of their troops in positions and this speed run, known as the Tokyo Express, while it may have gotten men in, getting bigger crap like artillery pieces, materiel and loads of food is another thing entirely and it also was a naval problem because the destroyers were more valuable in commerce protection (reason of this because the Japanese didn't really fully dedicate on frying subs or commerce raiding for that matter as they followed Admiral Mahan's theory of an all-powerful surface fleet which meant their subs need to help the fleet, not troll entire merchant convoys with torpedoes so hard and yes, this brilliant man is the namesake of the US tier 7 destroyer) for that matter. Well to add the notion, the US had yet to deploy hunter-killer squadrons to find such a thing like night convoys because they knew that if the enemy tried that stunt in the morning, their planes will be all over them. Also adding to the US wariness is that the first skirmishes had made them deem that the ocean at night is potential murder because of the the IJN skulking around and had trained in nighttime operations. To try and regain the initiative in the water and adequately resupply the guys at Henderson as they were constantly being pummeled the living shit out of, it was given to send small hunter-killer groups to try and interdict these transport runs in the night, and one potential task group after escorting a convoy had awaited for orders after their run and finished their night battle drills. On the side of the Japanese, another transport convoy was to make their run with delishus materiel, men and supplies and another separate group was to get into bombardment range and pummel the airfield again.

Italicized bold means the commander's in there

The US group of 4 cruisers and 5 destroyers

San Francisco (CA-48) - New Orleans

Boise (CL-47) - Brooklyn

Salt Lake City (CA-25) - St. Louis (the improved Brooklyn ya chuckleheads, not the armored cruiser you know, love and sealclub with)

Helena (CL-50) - St. Louis

Farenholt (DD-491) - Benson

Duncan (DD-485) - Gleaves

Buchanan (DD-484) - Gleaves

McCalla (DD-488) - Gleaves

Laffey (DD-459) - Benson

*note that Helena sunk during Kula Gulf because lolmuzzleflash, Duncan sunk during this skirmish, and Laffey sunk during the Guadalcanal brawl

The Japanese bombardment group

Aoba

Kinugasa

Furutaka

Fubuki

Hatsuyuki

The Japanese resupplying group

Nisshin

Chitose (that bit I read few days ago said he was aboard her although I question it as that was strange shit I read)

Asagumo

Natsugumo

Shirayuki

Yamagumo

Murakumo

Akizuki

2llf53o.jpgI shall now take this time to casually rail at the commander aboard Aoba for the glorious derp on the Japanese end that saw the going under of Fubuki and Furutaka, as well as Aoba herself getting whacked. Oh and the planes from Henderson caught up with the resupplying group and decked two more destroyers, Murakumo and Natsugumo.

Here's Boise after that brawl. The US weren't safe because miscommunication lol. They got fairly whacked with Duncan going under during the initial brawl, Farenholt eating shells from both enemy and friend because crossfire silliness and Boise getting enough to warrant a trip back to the shipyard for intensive repairs.

Recon planes first sighted the resupply group but couldn't really ID em all or where the full composition was and moved in to try and intercept them while at the same time, the bombardment group was moving in their run and got their signatures picked up by the scanners of the US ships as the spotters aboard Aoba were on full alert in peering out and saw some figures from afar which the captain there thought they were friendly despite the lookouts saying they're not to the point the commander aboard Aoba had flash identification signals. As the US group were maneuvering, apparently misunderstandings happened all round them as well as they saw the Japanese group in visual range, from Farenholt and Laffey increasing speed to keep in formation with the cruisers which Duncan mistook for the two destroyers attempting a torpedo run and so began a run herself at the enemy and Helena relaying "interrogative, roger" as SOP to act or not because they assumed the commander in San Francisco was well aware of the approaching enemy force who only responded "roger" that meant that the relay was received, which was taken as a signal to do whatever the hell you want had her and every cruiser there start firing which surprised the commander as the first shots were from Helena then followed up by the others including San Francisco he was in on.

244o8xg.jpg"They're friendly they said, flash identification codes they said! CURSE YOU AOBA!!!"

Note that this is painting of Furutaka being whacked during the battle.

Right after Aoba practically flashing "THIS IS AOBA" right in the face of the Americans, the cruisers and two of the destroyers directed their shots at the heavy cruiser which gave her a hard whacking and also killed the commander who thought they were elements of the supply group and it started to degenerate into an insane melee. Farenholt got a bit of shells by friendly and enemy fire and was forced to flash her identification in order to not be blasted by her group. As Aoba was smoking to run away, they unloaded at Furutaka so hard which had one of the tubes explode from shellfire and set her ass on fire which added more visual input on who to blast that eventually made her dead in the water as Kinugasa and Hatsuyuki tried to ninja away as Fubuki got caught out and was decked so hard her protagonist status did not actually save her because glorious confusion although Kinugasa who fired torpedoes which missed yet whacked Boise with her guns which nearly totaled the ship with a mag det of turrets 1 and 2 because "turn on your searchlights!" was a BRILLIANT idea instead of popping out star shells as well as getting into a firefight with Salt Lake City and knocking off a boiler that reduced the speed of the poor US heavy cruiser as Duncan, which was able to run away from the crossfire, was starting to sink when McCalla found her.

Doubt not, for your skepticism is made of pure, undiluted error, Goto. Aoba took a lot of hurt.

Wasn't over yet as during the brawl, the resupplying group which was initially seen and was attempted to be interdicted by the US group was actually never chased down but the planes from Henderson Field which arrived to killsteal like the prissy pilots that they are assist with the initial contact of ships in the darkness, found the elements of that group in the form of some destroyers trying to pick up survivors in the water which struck Murakumo hard to the point she was scuttled and Natsugumo down to the ocean because near misses actually count as a hit technically as they affect the ship after all with shockwaves in the water messing with hull integrity as Aoba and Hatsuyuki reached base safety for repairs and have what you.

Although this had a run for the US cruiser doctrine where guns are stronk, it was to be tested as the eventual run at Tassafaronga had the filthy smoke kemping scembegs destroyers laugh at the heavy cruisers because they didn't find out the full potency of the Long Lance in this run but they did find out how the Japanese fight in the night and this is not including them in the land trying to stab the defenders in their sleep by repeatedly assaulting Henderson even in the night.

Derp.exe has encountered a serious error.

Still can't say whether or not them type 93 long lance torpedoes were a marvel or a curse, being that having oxygen as the fuel allowed for faster, longer ranges and less trails(detectability), but their volatility is something, blowing up those poor cruisers in a spectacular manner.

For offensive use, the Type 93 is just insane but its also as volatile as hell but at least you know something getting hit by that is gonna leave a huge mark... compared to the derpy issues of what was the Mark 14 torpedo.

Yeah, imagine the raging them DD and submarine captains did when they simply didn't detonate, I believe the USS Hornet was a classic example where US mark 14's failed to scuttle her and it took the Japanese DD's to finish the job
