Torp Ranges v BB

I am hoping for a little help. I get cleaned up occasionally by carrier torps (Tier VI <) that are planted in very close to my broadside, that there is no opportunity to evade at all.

Does anyone have any tips that may help?

I acknowledge that these players are very skilled, and I am currently trying to turn into the planes prior, but in a BB, I just accept that I am going to take 2-3 hits?

You're doing the right thing, Turn into the torpedo bombers before come in for the bombing run,

it can force them to readjust making them spend more in your AA fire.

Manually target the bombers also, as i believe currently there is a damage buff to your AA when doing so.

So best you can hope for is to take out as many bombers as you can before the torpedo run thus reducing the potential damage.

And look for a Cleveland cruiser and stay close to him, they are a BB's best friend :P

Ask for a cruiser to accompany you during the first few minutes of the battle. If there is any good guy, they would escort you (if you ask). A smart carrier player never attack a battleship being escorted by a cruiser. But it's still better to sail with other ships. Never sail alone on a battleship. There is something worse than carrier... Destroyers... And they prey on lone battleship.

Start dodging as early as possible.

Even crossed torpedoes can be (partially) dodged when you put some effort in.

Works on lower tiers, works on mid tiers.

On tier VIII+... grab a cruiser for support. :P

As a CV player I can confirm that BBs escorted by Tier 6+ Cruisers are generally a no-go for our planes. Especially US ones.

Turning will force our planes to adjust and thus spend more time in your AA, but in some situations will open you up for a pincer attack (where TB squadrons attack from port and starboard simultaneously, making nearly impossible to dodge)

Well, not turning is surely even worse though...

General rule of thumb? Always turn towards TB squadrons. A pincer attack means you'll almost definitely be hit, but it's only one or two torpedoes if you turn right compared to five or more if you don't turn and the CV gets a manual drop on you.

PIncer attack IMHO, cannot be dodged 100%, especially if you're using BB.

Sometimes i think WG should do something with that pincers, since it can accurately hit a maneuvering DD under skilled player.

But for BB you must learn to focus AA on one of the incoming bomber, and give your belly to unavoided torp. Just hope it doesn't detonate your magazine area, instead hitting your anti torpedo bulge for reduced damage. Sometimes, it will not flood either.

If you're getting sunk by torpedoes as a BB then you're playing it right... It's the only effective way of bringing this behemoth class down... Torpedo planes plays on the BBs chief weakness of sheer size, and poor maneuverability... There are ways to control the damage but you can only do so much...

Another way of minimizing this issue is to look to your friendly cruisers for AA cover (especially US tubs). Just be within proximity of US cruisers and you've got a decent (if not reliable) AA death machine..

stick together as a group and pray for the best.

As a BB player, you go for the target you have the most confidence to hit.. so does a CV player, you will need to make yourself as hard to hit as possible, that includes constant adjustment of directions, travelling in a group and presenting as little broadside as possible to the direction of the planes.

This is always going to be a problem  , stick with cruisers  HOW  they leave you standing at start of battle making you prime target especially if cv or cvs are 2 tiers higher

doesnt help when you spawn as lone bb with cruisers and dds    i always turn into tps but they can adjust so quickly you are still caught out of position and aa really does nothing at tiers 5-6 especially again if

cvs are higher tier. Then yay finally caught up with group to watch them come under fire and turn around and again leave you standing

i mostly play cruisers and have stuck with bbs and cvs and yes shot down planes and helped them survive but then i find myself bottom of table with no exp and credits while their up there in top 3 plus staying with

bbs, 90% of time im never in range to use my main guns and again no exp or credits.  I mean go land 20 - 30 hits with main guns will always net you better exp and credits than any amount of planes shot down

Seriously would you rather get high exp and credits for a loss or win and get nothing. As i say always going to be a problem

may i just take this opportunity to praise your signature? its really cute LOL.

anyways i started like a few months back so im clearly an Ensign, and i had no idea Cleveland has such nice AA. Poor me ran down all the IJN lines while missing out on Cleveland's beautiful AA.  Kinda regret going down IJN tree now sighs

You get lucky sometimes. I fully dodged a      Zuiho's pincer attack in the Kirishima on the weekend. Laughed so hard.  Gotta love IJN BC mobility.  He didn't try again.

Great suggestions so far.

As a rule don't go off on a flank solo as a BB. This will excite everyone on the opposition.

Turn into the planes and manual fire at them. I start turning at 5-6 km. If the cv has aimed and is doing something else it may miss.

Module wise i always take the increased turning one for any BB ship to assist in turning quicker.

If you are a BB that also goes slow or stops you will get hit more. Know your surroundings and engage accordingly
