Hello once again,

Greeting to all in this Holiday season.........hope you all are enjoying a Merry Christmas. And over this weekend I bought my new tier 9 US CA Baltimore after 3 months of grinding my New Orleans. And after the grind I was like Baltimore.....piece of cake!!.....but after a few games I was basically forced to do some soul searching thanks to the following reasons:

1.This ship has a huge citadel!!..........A Yamato managed to wipe me out in 1 shell just minutes into the game.

2.THis ship eats CREDITS FOR BREAKFAST!!!!..............Too expensive to manage in a non-Premium Account.

Now, after many more games and as you guessed they all went as defeats and draws........I have no choice but to come to the forum for desperate answers.

So, to all the Beta,Apha, and Super testers, how do you play this ship???........Cuz I tried playing it like a New Orleans and it ended up in a disaster of a game!

Anybody?

Please?

Any help is appreciated.

And Once again Merry Christmas to all!:)

Er, you pretty much play it like a New Orleans.

Just seriously watch out for enemy battleships and never, never, never show your broadside to them.

Ok keep in mind I don't play USN ships, however I am a bit of an armchair admiral when it comes to crunching numbers.

Tier 9 - you will lose credits unless you play well and win at the same time. (Premium is a little different)

Baltimore has best AA DPS in the game, hopefully you saved enough free XP to fully upgrade the thing - that's always a good start with tier 8-10s.

So play her like many USN Cruisers, support support support. Always run Defensive AA fire, and given she does have the best AA in game, I would make sure you go the full spectrum of AA equipment upgrades as well.
Protect your big ships against Aircraft and smack any DD/CAs that come in range. Trick with most CAs is to angle yourself at all times and never broadside, ever. Your guns should be alternate firing - at least in front and rear groups.

She has good agility, so you should be able to make use of that with the guns.

To be honest if I had her, I'd be keeping her with a good Captain for when Team battles/CW rocks around. Having a specialist AA ship I can see being a big deal (if WoT CW was anything to go by in the specialists department)

Yeah I remember back in early Beta I was in a Furutaka and was dragged up into a tier 9 match (given how bad the Furu was at the time - I honestly just didn't care and it was the CA Tier 6 can see tier 9s).

1 Salvo'd a Baltimore due to a heap of cita hits. AWWWWWWWWWWWWW YEAH BEST FURU MOMENT EVER!!!
Did quickly die after that though.

Baltimore is much tougher than the NewOrlean. She's the most maneuverable and the toughest for tier9 cruiser her only drawback is weird gun arc which can be a problem firing at max range.

if you're just going to escort bigger ship I'd only suggest to do it ONLY in a division. I spent my first 60 game in my Baltimore escorting a bigger ship. which turn out that I have 38%wr in her

I've found that I'd be much useful if I can use my main gun up close so I can ignore that gun arc. so I change from running defensive AA and escorting a bigger ship to running hydro acoustic search

and be a specialize dd hunter. at 140 game my win rate is getting closer to 50%

Here's my guide for anti surface Baltimore

On Baltimore vs. Cruiser situation

always point your bow toward the enemy(like S4pp3R said that you never want to show your broadside to anything) and keep firing. remember that you've got strongest frontal fire power for tier9 cruiser. you have weird gun arc so the best engaging range for her is 13km or lower otherwise you'd even have a problem dealing with Myoko.

if the enemy have torpedo- keep firing he until you get in to 8km. switch to AP, and look for an opportunity to turn around because you don't want to get too close to a torpedo ship. Also look for a moment that he might turn around as well. if you manage to connect a salvo into his broadside you can expect >10k damage from a single salvo. But do expect him to do the same to you if you're not careful.

if the enemy doesn't have torpedo you can just keep getting closer. keep in mind that you also got strongest secondary of all t9 cruiser.

On Baltimore vs. Destroyer situation

when you first spot him keep shooting him with HE. Expect him to pop up a smoke screen, here's when hydro acoustic become useful. turn it on and get in to the smoke

keep monitoring if he's got torpedo that he can launch or not. when you're rushing in to smoke make sure you can aim every gun on your target.

If he doesn't have torpedo-get up close and keep shooting him the same way that you do at 6km but now it's 3km.

if he does have torpedo- once you spot him fire everything you've got. you're only 3km away from him so pay extra attention to his torpedo launcher and when it launch try your best to dodge it. You've got like 10sec to dodge it. usually I'd cut my throttle and turn toward him.after you've dodge them just kill him. he should die in no more than 3 salvo considering Baltimore got a sweet shell spread.

On Baltimore vs. Battleship situation

as I've mention above. If Baltimore is a boss when fighting cruiser of destroyer(if you don't get hit by torp) she's obviously OP but why nobody likes her. Well, here's her only and the most serious draw back.

When it come to Baltimore vs BB all she can do is support allied BB and hoping that he don't screw up because she don't have any anti flagship weapon(Torpedo) all she can do is keep pointing her bow at them or try to retreat.

There's no point for Baltimore to get into a close quarter fight with enemy's battleship because she's the ONLY tier9 cruiser that doesn't have and torpedo.

those guide only mention 1on1 situation

Conclusion

with most of BB player be like'I will only shoot at 20km'(which I think it's waste of time escorting them so I'd better support allied dd when he's capping an area) and cruiser can shoot at 16km. max. most cruiser will be killed by BB who don't want to kill each other. so Baltimore vs. Cruiser situation rarely happen. considering that BB can fire at >20km. even when you're hunting a DD expect a BB to be aiming at you. and the reason why most people hate this ship is that most high tier fight happen at 15-21 km. which is the max firing range of Baltimore and with that shell arc you'll rarely hit anything. If you try to get in to 12km range you'd be target by almost every BB on the enemy's team. so the way to use her potential most effectively is to support a BB or help DD getting cap in the first half of battle since you can't get the cap youself nor you can fight a BB. on later half of the game you can go and find and enjoy a 1on1 Battle with enemy;s ship who's not BB considering number of BB shouldn't be that much anymore and they're busy fighting other BB. Most player who complain about this ship(including my past self) is mostly a hot blood person who can't wait for second half of battle.

edit: turning between salvo is a better move. thanks Synda for mentioning it.

if the enemy have torpedo- keep firing he until you get in to 8km. switch to AP, start reversing(thrust me you don't want to get too close) and wait until he open his broadside to launch his torpedo then shoot him with everything you've got and you can expect >10k damage from a single salvo fired only by your frontal gun. if you can do so you can duel and cruiser

Killing your speed and reversing is the worst possible thing to do while in a cruiser. You will extremely rarely find yourself in a 1-on-1 situation and a reversing cruiser is a sitting duck for everything else in range, not to mention an easy target for the cruiser you're duelling in question. Turning between salvoes is a better option.

Yeah I have to agree with Syanda on this - if I was watching you whilst you did it, I'd notice almost immediately and shoot torps accordingly...
The whole reversing tactic people seem to use only really works against plebs, You may dodge one/half a salvo from a decent player, but after that you will get shredded.

Sorry, my fault. for most of time turning between salvo is always a better move. thanks for the correction

I was actually shocked you posted it - considering your stats. Seriously questioned my own sanity for a second :P:ohmy:
