Which defensive upgrade do you prefer for Cruisers?

  1. 1. Which defensive upgrade do you choose on your cruisers?

    • Always the reduced fire/flood
      5
    • Always the steering upgrade
      3
    • Always the propulsion upgrade
      1
    • It varies depending on the weaknesses of the specific cruiser

I am kind of torn on this at the moment.

You know the 2nd (250k) upgrade where you get choices like

- reduced chance of fire/flood

- reduced chance of steering damage

- reduced chance of propulsion damage

For BBs I go for reduced fire/flood.

For DDs I go for reduced chance of propulsion loss.  Granted I may be overlooking something about the various vulnerabilities of different ships, but I figure a stopped DD is a dead DD and if you have no speed then you have no steering anyway.

But for cruisers I'm having trouble deciding which is more useful.  Any thoughts on this?

DC1 always for me in slot 4 (assume tier 10 and all six upgrade slots available) - reduce that chance of critical damage.

Slot 5 is dependant on the ships weakness - either rudder shift or DC, not many of the CL/CA need the acceleration boost.

Slot 6 is always concealment (the acquisition upgrade is an ongoing joke from Alpha lol)

For me it is never the steering upgrade as you can still move and dodge with your steering knocked out.

I used to favour the reduced fire/flood but in most cruisers you should not be getting torped too often and the reduction in fire is fairly small.

Now I tend to go with the propulsion mod, because like DD's a stopped CA is a dead CA.

But ultimately the choice will depend on the individual ship.

i use fire and flodding prevention upgrade on my atago, but i use steering on my cleveland.

apparently it depends on which tier and what kind of ship you are using

Oh god, I need the steering on Atago. It's like a Battleship without it.

Thank god they buff it a bit.

It's depend of the cruiser itself's weakness. but most of time I'd go for steering upgrade because that's the only cruiser's real defense(dodge! dodge! and dodge!).

Sounds like you're talking now about the enhancements (slot 3?), rather than the protections (slot 2)?

All good to know, I've only got to that level of upgrade dilemma in my DD so far.

I agree rudder enhancement in slot 3 sounds useful for a cruiser.

But what did you pick in slot 2?

Depends, Steering is useful for torpedo armed cruisers so that they can make one last torpedo attack before being sunk, but otherwise I generally pick the propulsion.

Never the damage control as the benefits are negligible compared to those of the other two - fires and flooding are a reality you'll constantly have to deal with
