As someone who likes the concept of the battlecruiser despite it merging with the battleship thought when the Washington Naval Treaty was in full effect and ratified, I'd like to shitpost this thing from Germany.

I PRESENT TO YOU THE ERSATZ YORCK.

GLORIOUS BATTLECRUISER PLAN.

Well, this was one really funky ship despite being paper because it was, essentially, a more souped up version of ANOTHER paper battlecruiser it was derived from.

Now the German Navy, back then called the Kaiserliche Marine or the old Imperial German Navy for the tongue oriented, had also built their own capital ships and battlecruisers were no exception, but their design thought was different from their counterparts on the island in Europe who were virtually unchallenged on the waves as they wanted their vessels to have the strongest integrity and durability as possible. Their finest and latest battlecruiser class were the Derflingers but since the British were also hardcore battlecruiser builders although their thought was the direct opposite: guns and speed over armor, they wanted a cruiser that would be superlative to what the British would build which resulted in the Mackensens but they found out and started keeling the Renowns and chucked with more resources. Again with the newfound battlecruiser to outmatch, they went with a souped up Mackensen they called the Ersatz Yorck but they too found out and started keeling the Admirals although Hood won the race after being keeled. Just like their predecessors, the Ersatz Yorks were cancelled because Germany loved to subcheese the damn ocean and force people to play Pin the depth charge on the U-boat.

this is Mackensen...

and THIS is the Ersatz Yorck. Familiar?

This class chucks three ships in em however: the Ersatz Yorck herself, Ersatz Gneisenau and Ersatz Scharnorst. And as you noticed, yes, two of these were to be the second Scharnhorst and Gneisenau if they were built. Aside from being slightly bigger and longer than their design derivatives the Mackensens, the things were to be planned with eight 15 inch guns because damn the 13 inch ones on Mackensen with all four dual mount turret designs and guns from the Bayerns except for that weird ring on both "B" and "X" turret roofs so that it wouldn't be akin to "bomb me here" for the aircraft, several 6 inch guns for secondaries, 88's for its wonky AA suite (yes, a Sopwith Cuckoo lugging a large torpedo is very scary) and 24 inch torpedo tubes because all capital ships have tubes on em, ALL of em during WWI. Why'd you think the two Renowns got theirs removed because it was a derpy idea? Each were to be protected with about 4-12 inches of belt, about an inch or two of deck, about 12 inches of bridge superstructure, 11 inches of main battery turret and nearly 6 inches for the secondaries. She also had a reasonable bulge with the bulkheads within the hull quite sound enough.

A strange thing however, Ersatz Yorck edged out against Renown... on paper... with weird bits:

GUNS

Renown - 15 inches

Ersatz Yorck - 15 inches

Now this wouldn't be unfair for anything else but to add the version was this: the British 15 inch gun which should be on the Queen Elizabeth could load at 38 seconds whilst the German 15 inch gun that was on the Bayern could load at 23 seconds. To add more bit, the German gun were used as rail guns and called "Langer Max"es and had a freaky range when emplaced but rather bad(?) as rail guns

SPEED

Renown - nearly 32 knots

Ersatz Yorck - nearly 28 knots

Well for all fairness, the Brits DID emphasize speed and gun potency as the Germans emphasize durability and survival

ARMOR

Ersatz Yorck wins that one, even for a freaky battlecruiser.

OVERALL

The closest thing the Ersatz Yorck could line with is the Admiral, especially Hood which was THE biggest battlecruiser and also likely the last one ever out of the slipway. She virtually outclasses Renown on paper stats wise.

In-game stat wise, she'll most likely be reformatted as a battleship and her protection looks sound enough to not be lolpen'd by a Wyoming but I feel she'll have a very insane range like 23 or 24km and unloads at 23 seconds if the grace of insanity comes by.

That is all.

What would she have to balance out her armour and reload time, then?

The most probable thing I can think of would be the dispersion. From what I could drag, the 15 inch on the Bayern, at the cost that it loads fast, has a strange deviation in accuracy whereas the 15 inch guns the British loved were quite good.

Possibly a tier 6-7 ship? With paper upgrades and all she can probably perform better than the Bayern class especially due to the speed and similar characteristics to the British Admiral class which looks like a possible tier 6/7.

I like to slate Renown as a tier 7 in terms of fast battleship builds but Admiral can definitely stand at tier 8 for that matter.

The painful part of EY will probably be the dispersion as the Bayern, if included in the German battleship line, can never score hits on the enemy at maximum effective range without spotting plane.

Probably a premium ship. Unless WG decides to hold it back for a separate BC line. Or they could use the WW2 Scharnhorst as a premium (that would solve the problem of having a high tier BB/BC with such small guns in the regular tech tree).
