Buff Florida and Hawaii while you're at it, please.

Thanks

(I will confess it is rather annoying to see Iowa's defining characteristic, namely her ridiculous speed, nerfed)

Just had a look at it's stats. I wonder why is the Iowa so much slower in game that RL?

Well the effective operational max speed with a combat load was realistically somewhere around 32.5-32.7kts.

The silly speeds, the ones as high as 35kts (LOL), were all achieved under trials or not with a full combat load.

So Iowa should have at least 32.5kts as top speed.

A piece of useless information - There is a difference between War time speed and Peace time speed!! In times of war, the props are changed to ones that are slightly bigger and having more pitch, allowing for faster speeds. The silly speed as you call it Steel is most likely the War time prop being used with full compression on the boilers, which would make the speed in game more likely the peace time speed. Some time after Vietnam, the practice of prop changing was stopped and ships were given new props that had characteristics of both props. Now day variable pitch props are the norm.

You might enjoy reading this.

An interesting appendix at the bottom of that article:

Other maximum speeds achieved.

1) When the Iowa and New Jersey attempted to run down the fleeing Japanese destroyer IJN Nowaki near Truk in February 1944, both ships reached 32.5 knots with the throttles wide open, according to the Iowa's pitometer log.  With clean bottoms, they probably could have gone a bit over a knot faster.  There is no mention of what was the SHP or the displacement on that day.

2) During her Korean tour, the Iowa's Captain William Smedberg remembered getting his ship over 33 knots on at least one occasion.  There is no mention of what was the SHP or the displacement on that day.

3) Before her Vietnam deployment the New Jersey obtained 35.2 knots at 207 RPM during machinery trials.  There is no mention of what was the SHP or the displacement on that day.

4) In 1985 the Iowa slightly exceeded 32 knots at 205 RPM.  There is no mention of what was the SHP or the displacement on that day.

Cheers
