How to play the New Orleans

Hey guys,

I have had the New-Orleans for about a month and after transitioning from the 'PEPSI COLA" i played it in the same way that i played the Pepsi but after so many games i just realized that the cruiser was a different breed than the Pepsi and could not be played the same way. Also even after winning a game and doing something abt 10-20k damage(P.S i use HE as American AP is a lottery shot and at best i am average shot.) I still end up losing credits and after so many games i have finally given up and come to ask all the Alpha and Beta testing veterans, How do you really play a New-Orleans class Cruiser profitably and second question is that whether the 2nd Gun Module mod is good enough to be researched and bought or should I simply skip over it and go on to the Baltimore . Also is the Baltimore to be played the same way as a New-Orleans?

Vell, um, New Orleans is kinda like, weird CA for me, I usually utilize her as a support vessel, like, let teh BBs go out, they shoot, and I just stay near the BB and supermanuvering all the time. The enemy doesn't usually care about u, u have to manuver all teh time

Or second option, Go with other CAs and conduct a scout and DD hunt while avoid teh enemy's heavy hitters

For Balti, Vell, she looks stronger that the NO, but I usualy play in the same style, support role.

P.S. Must avoid taking damage, those repair cost sucks, really

Play just like the Pensacola. Long Range Support and Escorting CVs/BBs.

Just that it had 1 less gun but a bit more ROF, and a bit more HP as well as AA. Oh and your armor is at least not citadel-ed by 6 inch shells now at least.

Oh and in general..... If you are decent in your gunnery skills playing IJN Cruiser is a better idea. It basically had better everything except armor (Which can be compensated by Angling) and AA (Which can also be compensated by sticking with teammates and Barrage). And it had Torpedos, making them even better and also a Direct Threat to Battleships.

Cleveland are basically the end of your joyful days since the St Louis.

Compare to the Mogami, New Orlean (NO for short) is not a big threat and it usually is underestimated. But not as bad as the "pepsi-cola", NO HE shell deal better damage and it's best that you research and buy the 2nd gun module because the road to baltimore is hard and full of terror :hiding:.

Stick with what USN CA do the best: AA support, just escort big BB around and support them with AP and fire (try to burn enemy ships). BTW, AP of NO is best used at 8km range, the angle is good enough for the shell to penetrate and hit citadel, speaking with my own experience.

NewOrlean have more armor than Pensacola but don't let that fool you to think that you are tougher because pensacola rarely met any tier8 BB while you have to meet them every game.

Everybody know that BB get much better at tier8 meaning that playing neworlean you must be more careful than what you did in pensacola

Neworlean can actually solo kill any cruiser it met beside zao and desmoines with AP round. I used to play it just then way I play pensacole which usually net me 40k-50k damage per game

but I was able to do only 10-30k per game in new orlean because I die too fast and tier8 BB player are likely to fight at their max range.

so how do I play this guy?

since 40ish game I realized that playing it like pensacola won't work and I can't blame RNG anymore so I change my play style from front liner to be a real BB escort.

first I'll observe that the how the BB you are accompanying use his ship. if he only shoot at max range and never go close quarter. I'll just leave him

because he'll just let his team mate die while he got full health then get sunk by torpedo. And another type of BB player is BB player who engage at 15km or lower staying in line with cruiser

I'll follow him because he'll take a shot for me but I'll need to make him safe from every type of harm that is not from a gun(torp, plane) it's a win-win situation. I can also help shooting his target

and he won't die from torpedo. both of us will get high exp. that's my playstyle

yeah, same as me, I hate BBs that just stay back and snipe from max range, what's the point of having armor and huge HP pool when you just chill at base and let your teammates take the punches?

for me to play the New Orlean, I usually go escorting CVs when the second hull and the fire control weren't researched. When I had both of those modules, I started playing a bit more aggressive, taking the second line, firing at any CAs or BBs in sight for two or three times and then retreating and then doing all those things again. Never get too close (about 13km or less) to the enemy BBs. Use AP when you fight other CAs, I can almost always hit the citadel of the enemy Myoko and Mogami, which are quite common in tier 8 random, and HE when you fight BBs. But if there is only one BB and you manage to get close to him and you have good shooting angle, use AP instead, it can help you deal a lot of damage to the BB.

When a ship is often referred to as a "support ship" or a "long range support ship" it is usually a nice way of saying....its crap

Actually, I found the New Orleans back in CBT to be a decent ship, its got its guns arranged in the most optimal manner for angle fighting (wide arcs, 6 front, 3 back), and its armor, while not the best, is much better than the Pensacola's and won't get citadel hits as much. Its got a better RoF and is a much shorter ship, making it harder to hit at range than the Mogami

I play NO like a DD. Concealment is very important. I upgrade gun fire control mod 1. At the start I may screen CV's and BB's but my anti air is only ok for self defence. I hunt other CA's mostly. AP vs CA is GG. Stay at range and armor angle properly. I play this ship like a sniper.
