    CV's

Perhaps OT to this thread but with all the pro CV or anti CV arguments going around, one interesting historical fact emerges which may confirm why CVs are designed to be what they are in WOW (OP or otherwise): Battle of Midway. US CV squadron spots a lone IJN DD going flank speed. DD had peeled off main fleet to deal with US sub I recall. US pilots surmises that DD probably rejoining main fleet and true enough, they follow DD which leads them to the IJN CVs. The rest as they say is history.... That's the historical accuracy illustrating the potential power of CV spotting and CV damage dealing that completely decides a battle... IMHO Point of interest, IJN enjoyed a heavy surface combatant numerical superiority over USN. They had BBs like Yamato, Fuso, Kongo, Ise, Hyuga to zero USN BBs. IJN more CAs (Myoko, Atago, Mogami etc) than USN (New Orleans, Pensacola etc) IJN more DDs (Ashashio, Fubuki, Kagero, Yudachi, Yugumo, Yukikaze etc) than USN (Benham, Monagham etc) All familiar names to WOW players and boy did I enjoy this blast from the past post!

Thanks for asking. The sight is the one that is toggled on in settings 30 knot lead i believe. i was for the most part playing Tier 8 and 9 premium German and Italian BBs.

I guess it;s back to school then. Many thanks. Truly many facets to this amazing game.

Going from ranked to randoms is frustrating

So what did you think your team mates should have done to win? Could be lessons here for all those who are advocating teamwork in ranked battles rather than the current camping, sniping and hiding meta.

Let me guess, you were pushing for a Cap and tanking for the team hoping this will encourage your team to move with you. Next thing you know, you are taking focused fire because the campers have dropped back and there is no one else for the reds to shoot ?

    Aiming help sought

500 odd battles ago, I switched to the dynamic aiming reticule in the hope that my abysmal gunnery will improve. Average damage has gone up slightly but I am a long way from being able to farm hi Caliber type damage. Assuming the target is more or less broadside, i align the horizontal lines with the hash marks midway between the waterline and deck assuming that that's the best way to get citadels. That works more or less for lower tier cruisers as a whole but I just can't cause big pen damage to BBs and higher tier cruisers. So when watching some aiming videos, I noticed that the pros aim their reticule ( with the horizontal lines if present also similarly aligned) exactly at the waterline but wouldn't mean that normal dispersion would cause some shells to hit water first before the hull thereby reducing the penetration? At brawling range, I can actually see shell holes made by my guns at the BB belt armour at my aim points usually between the B and X turrets but very very few citadels. Utterly confused so any guidance on this would be deeply appreciated. Thanks all.

Maybe if WG started to give more XP to damage taken BBs will be more prepared to push as opposed to farm and snipe. After all this is already recognised as a mission in some battle modes. Even the current Battle of Beasts has this as a mission.

Yes you are right. I can speak from painful experience that we are seeing a lot of passive BB play. In a recent game, me driving Frederiche DG suggested to my team that I push for Cap C defended by 2 red BBs, a CA and a DD and offered to tank damage so they can secure the cap. Doable as we were then a 3 BB and one CA formation heading slowly for C. Response ? "Good, go and lose". Another example, I suggested the BBs group together for a joint push for a contested Cap. One BB says good idea. The Lepanto captain IMMEDIATELY peeled off and sped off by himself for the closest non contested Cap!!! Another recent example me driving a Pommern seeing a DD and CA team mate in trouble in one Cap went to flank speed to give support. Just when I got into range of the closest enemy ship a BB at the back line asked me to "get back" 3 times!!! What is wrong with ALL BBs charging a Cap in ranked when it is likely that we will enjoy a numerical superiority at that Cap point when it was clear the enemy would have one less BB at least defending since he is spotted at the other Cap point? I just can't get my teammates to make that group charge. What good would splitting up the BBs do? One BB going off to support a CA and DD capping the near point makes no sense as they would be out of position to provide an effective flank for the main charge into the contested Cap point? Possibly I am not seeing the things experienced players are seeing in my noob observations?

On paper it does appear that Pommern is tailor made for brawling. But in reality, does a souped up secondary build on a Pommern make that much of a difference? Given that: 1) Pommern will take damage and even overmatch damage from Musashi well before she gets into brawling range; 2) Pommern main batt will not overmatch Mushashi bow armour; 3) Pommern German dispersion will not significantly hurt Mushashi if she is (and has to be ) bow tanking with only 6 381 mm barrels able to fire; 4) Unmasking all 12 guns will guarantee heavy pen damage even if no citadels ; 5) The secondaries may cause 3k damage and maybe start 6k fire at most; 6) Her torps have high chance of being disabled long before they get into range and even if they do survive, turning her to bring the tubes to bear will likely get her sunk especially if she is low on HP by then. My conclusion is that the brawling advantage is in reality not significant when one on one vs Mushashi. As for Marco, she will get deleted at any range as long as any hint of broadside is shown and the damage caused by her SAPs and AP 402 mm aren't going to be enough to kill Mushashi in a brawl. I will try your suggestion about abusing concealment of Alabama and speed of Kii but the citadels of these 2 are just tailor made for one shotters by Mushashi ( and any other BBs in the MM spread for that matter) . The real problem i perceive from my admittedly limited experience is that the maneuvers and hiding necessary to play the concealment and movement game just takes you too much out of the battle to the extent that you can't really contribute meaningfully for your team especially if you are expected to do the usual BB thing like tank for your team mates, take out cruisers, join a push etc. You will be dancing around and hiding to counter a single ship but Mushashi doesnt need to sacrifice any of these functions just for the sake of one enemy BB. Same can be said for JB to a certain extent.

I think this is my point . JB can more than hold her own against Musashi. JB not for sale anymore. What else available now that can do that? Marco Polo, Pommern, Alabama, Kii?

I feel you. More overpowered ships I observed ...Jean Bart, Georgia, Paulo Emilio, Cossack, SIegfred. There was a good reason why they were withdrawn from sale or in the case of Sieg locked behind the research bereau because you see these same ships getting hi caliber with alarming regularity and in many games, the only ones with multiple kills. I agree that it is not a level playing field at qualifying when these monsters are everywhere.

Congrats but really first time after 12k battles? This really illustrates the frustrations and faults with this ranked system if accomplished players have to struggle so hard and so long to get to Silver.

That is just great insights all around not something you can find on the wow site. Many thanks and the big takeaway is that you need to get cerebral in this game to do well. Appreciate the advice Max!!

Many thanks for the great info. How do you survive the inevitable torp salvos and focus fire when you are leading the charge? How fast do you go? flank speed? WHen do you decide to stop the charge if your teammates are not supporting? Can you even stop when you are commited without exposing your broadside in a turn? Apologies for all the newbie questions but any advice will be appreciated in this awesomely fascinating strategy game. Many thanks again
